This game was announced for the NES in the Official Nintendo Buyer's Guide back in 1987. Sadly, it never saw the light of day, at least on that system. However, I suspect that the project was eventually resurrected on the original black and white GameBoy, and was ultimately released as Donkey Kong '94. Can anyone confirm these suspicions with some hard evidence?

Many people feel that the Gameboy Donkey Kong game may have had something to do with Return of Donkey Kong. Unfortunately there is practically zero amount of info out there on Return, so there isn't any solid evidence. I wonder if this game ever got started on at all. That game is one of the most mysterious unreleased Nes games of all time. |

I always thought Return of Donkey Kong just ended up being the game Donkey Kong Classics. Both DK and DKJr. were in the original lineup of NES game releases. DKClassics came later on, pretty sure after that ad for Return of DK.
I thought Nintendo was just promoting the release of both of these games on the same cart, but probably dropped the title "Return of..." because it sounded like it would be a sequel of sorts and didn't want to give the consumer false hope for a new game. |

That's very possible, but Nintendo Power actually printed a blurb about playing AS Donkey Kong. Of course, they could have been misinformed. |

*Sigh*.
I guess we'll never know. Gameboy Donkey Kong kicks butt, though.
By all means, it should be considered the true sequel to Donkey Kong. |
