After much research, work, and procrastination, another article is ready for consumption. This one is brought to you by yours truly, Kenny Sutherland. And it only took two years to get around to finishing it, to.
This month's feature is another "lost" Squaresoft title. This is a game that sunk an entire console before it was even launched, bringing a video game empire back to Earth and ascending another in its place. Well, sort of. But not really. Read on, and learn the truth about this month's feature Elusions: Final Fantasy 64.
Well, kind of 64, anyway. |

As always, GRATE article!
That big stone-guy somehow reminds me of Barret, especially the whole machinegun-fist-thing.
Also, is that girl really Celes? I can't seem to remember her ever wearing a skimpy red bikini. |

Notes:
The blonde is Terra - character art for her was blonde, and god only knows why she had green hair in game.
FFVI was NOT known as FFIII in Europe - it was never even released until after VII came out (and neither were FFI or FFIV, so there'd be no reason to call it III).
SIR YOU NEED A LESSON IN REGANOMICS.
For serious though, I enjoyed it. |

You know, funny thing here, I actually had that information from another thing I'd been working on before, and I neglected to look it up to verify it.
Shoddy journalism, indeed. |

It was a good article, though. I think someone should lobby Square to port this to DS as a bonus thing for FF3. |

Another good article.
I remember this demo from back in the day only b/c it had Shadow in it. Ahh, the good old days.
I if wonder Square-Enix would ever make a bastard sampler CD
with FF64, the PS2 demo, the PS3 demo and the MSX version of
FF1.
I guess they could throw in the Wonderswan version of FF3 while their at it. |

I hope they call it "Bastard Sampler," and that they change their company name to the Fenky-suggested "SEX USA." |

Figured out I'd add some stuff:
A couple of pictures taken from the "Final Fantasy VII - International - Perfect Guide" disc
And...
A higher quality video taken from the "Final Fantasy VII - Sampler (PSX-J)" disc
Download Now (25mb)
(sorry about using WMV format... something's wrong with my codec pack at the moment, but well, I compared the video with the original before uploading it, looks identical to a normal human eye, but with pixel pr pixel comparing, you'll notice WMV garbage crap) |

Wow, thanks Carnivol. I don't know if we can take the hammering on our hosting that a 25mb video will cause right off the bat, but I'll definitely add that in there later. You can even read the credits from that video. Nice. |

Is that whole demo disc actually ripped and floating around online? I was actually thinking of buying a relatively cheap copy before just to rip the video, but that's obviously not so necessary now. Thanks. |

Someone torrent it on a public tracker, shouldn't be a big deal. |

I used to have that disc (I probably watched that interview like eleventybajillion times). I MAY still have it packed away, but I'm doubting it. I'm gonna be really sad if I don't QQ
Great article, thanks for putting the dog to sleep once and for all. I'm getting sick hearing about FF64.
*When EGM (could have been GameFan) was covering FF7's progress, they did make mention of the SIGGRAPH demo; one thing I clearly remember was mentioned was the controls. They mentioned that drawing certain shapes with the mouse/stylus executed certain commands, like a star made the characters cast a spell and a circle summoned a monster. I'd have to go digging around for it, but I know it's out there.
Hmm, I do wonder if there was ever plans for FF7 to be on SNES though. I remember calling Nintendo's old 800 number one time to check on the release date of something or another and asked about FF3 (which was just announced to be based on FF6 at the time instead of FF5; FF Extreme was still in the gameplan at that point). The rep stated that Square was begining development on FF7. Almost certain that he was probably talking out of his ass, but for me it's like the Zelda 3 NES bit; I know it's bullshit, but you can't help but to wonder how that could have worked.
*EDIT:
Ah, remember SQUARE's beautiful SIGGRAPH demo (GF Vol.3 Iss. 10)? Though it wasn't the Nintendo64 game everyone assumed it to be, it still holds a valuable spot in FF history as the most direct ancestor of FF VII's battle system. Believe it or not, it's actually a pretty cool (and totally playable) little game. Instead of the usual menu system, you control your characters by drawing shapes (a star for magic for example) with the mouse. Maybe SQUARE will send you a copy if you buy an Onyx... (or maybe not)

Sounds like an idea they could possibly use in a DS title. |
