|
|
A few questions regarding regions and licensing, specifically about nes games (for now)..
1. Are there any games, unlicensed by Nintendo, that have multiple versions for multiple regions? For example, unlicensed company Y publishes game X in each the USA and the UK (or HK or JP or whatever), and makes changes in the program in each region.
2. I had other questions and have already forgotten them. |

Sachen did multiple languages, if that's what you mean. Mandarin and English in-game, and I have manuals and boxes in Spanish and German.
This is a weird question kap, what's your secret agenda? |

Mandarin and english, huh, I had no idea. I assume you only have the english versions.
I don't care at all about packaging, label or manual variations, at this point.
My agenda isn't ready for public consumption, and probably won't be any time soon (if ever).
I'd also like to know about any more examples that might exist, no matter how nitpicky they might seem. |

There was a prototype Spanish version of Bible Adventures in that box of stuff sfsurvivor bought, but I don't think that version was ever released.
The US and Australian versions of Maxi 15 have a different lineup of games: the US version has Double Strike and Pyramid where the Australian version has Death Race and Blackjack. The other 13 games are the same.
I dunno if it counts for your purposes, but several Tengen releases were pirated versions of FC games, like Fantasy Zone.
And this is kinda obvious, but the Panesian games were localized versions of Hacker titles. |

Pirated? Surely they had a business relationship with Sega, else they would have disappeared much faster than they did. Right? |

I think Tengen's Fantasy Zone port, was done by an entirely different team than Sunsoft's Famicom one. |

Indeed. Different games entirely. |

Okay, Fantasy Zone was a bad example. Rolling Thunder, then. |

I still don't think they were "pirated," though. They must have had some relationship with Namco as well, given the Pac-Man/Mania/Ms. Pac releases.
Plus Namco apparently had no US distribution branch then, or was just purposely avoiding doing business with NoA, since most of their other games came here through Sunsoft.
And hey, Sunsoft. It all comes full circle. |

Aparently Namco avoided NoA because Mino Arakawa, the old US President of NoA was a narcoleptic who fell asleep during a dinner with their US rep. They didn't trust him after that. |

Kinda wondering why Tengen developed their own version of Pac-Man instead of just getting Namco's while they were getting Famista (RBI Baseball) and Rolling Thunder (interesting that Namco released Pac-Man nearly a decade later in America. Doubt we'd see that happen now in the games industry. Okay, compilations, yeah we would.). |

Anal note: The first three games weren't called "Famista", but rather "Pro Yakyuu Family Stadium" (プロ野球ファミリースタジアム).
Don't forget Alien Syndrome and After Burner and Toobin' and Gauntlet, etc. Strange company, that Tengen. Weren't they an offshoot of what was left of Atari at the time? |

I think the book is called Game Over. It's the book about the history of Nintendo as a whole. If you think that story is cool, you should learn The Secret History of Tetris. Shit would make a decent Film Noir thriller. (Russian Spies!) |
