I'm sure most of you have seen the Ghostbusters videos on youtube by now, but if you haven't here they are for the sake of discussion.

Gameplay Footage
Venkkman Talking
Ecto 2 Paintjob
Ecto 2 Driving

There has been a lot of speculation out there as to the legitimacy of these videos. Most are claiming it is a mod of Gears of War (Where'd they get the code to mod?), and a lot are saying it's a mod of something else (HL2, CS, Q3, etc.)
The user who posted it is "bostjanzoot", the CEO of ZootFly is Bostjan Troha (who is also a designer).

Seems to me like it very well could be a legitimate game in early stages. Perhaps they don't legally have the license for it yet, and are looking to shop it around in some sort of guerrilla fashion. Or perhaps they think press releases are boring and would rather publish videos on YouTube with bare minimum descriptions and let the hype build itsself (although from these videos, it hardly needs it).

What do you guys think?

I like the guerilla marketing theory the best. Given Bill Murray's refusal to be associated with any Ghostbusters merch beyond the timeframe of the movies, his likeness in these videos suggests to me that this is not an officially licensed project, at least not yet. They're probably shopping it around to publishers and coming up flat, and have tried Youtube out of desperation (or mad genius).

Engine looks like UE3 to me, so they're already down $1 million on budget.

Edit: On second thought, this probably isn't UE3. Maybe they're showing off their proprietary engine with a little Ghostbusters demo?

Either way, news sites are going to be misinterpreting the hell out of this. They probably already are!

4 Color Rebellion says that it is a "mod of either the Gears of War engine, or the Source engine."

Joystiq writes a fairly level-headed story.

Ain't It Cool News who I think broke the story seems to doubt it's integrety as well.

This Slovakian site, which I can't read, tells me this is a PC title. Interesting (maybe?) ZootFly is based in this country, maybe they know more than we do.

And I'm sure NeoGAF, Kotaku, and a million others are covering it in a similar fashion... Haven't seen any major sites covering it yet.

Meanwhile, we're left with Ghostbusters 3D: Back In Action until this, and IF THIS, becomes a real title.

It's a really complex prank, if is meant as one. I can tell developing something like that takes a lot of time.

My vote goes down to UE3 as well...

The lighting isn't right for Renderware, but the physics match.

The Neon glow looks about right for UE3 but the particles match the Doom 3 engine more...

It'd be fairly easy to tell the engine from the bump mapping, but you can't see squat from a youtube vid.

Someone on Game|Life (not Chris Kohler, some new guy), posted this interesting tidbit:

Quote:
Comparing the YouTube footage with a demo reel on the Zootfly website for their next-gen Xubl game engine, there are a ton of similarities between in-game environments, architecture, and ambiance.

So perhaps you were on the right track there. I can't get their site to load (have been trying since this morning) so I can't confirm or deny these claims.

If these fucks would just go on record about it we could all stop guessing.

The fact that they don't use the official logo makes me think more and more that this is them shopping their goods around.

So, it is real (!!!) but might not be released (SadSadSad)

I won't link you to the arcticle because it's on IGN (ick) but I'll paste the quote here for you

Quote:
Bostjan Troha, CEO of ZootFly, told IGN UK: "We are very glad to see the overwhelming response to the Ghostbusters prototype movies. What you've seen is indeed in-game footage of early prototypes on the Xbox 360, running on ZootFly's proprietary engine. Due to licensing issues, further development of the Ghostbusters game hit a bump on the road. But everybody here at ZootFly is working actively on resolving the challenges with the owners of the Ghostbusters IP.

"Not to lose the momentum, a part the ZootFly team is currently working on an original game called TimeO, which is closely related to Ghostbusters. The game follows the adventures of two die-hard New Yorkers. They get trapped deep in the shadow world of a parallel New York. The city itself is a war machine threatening to wipe out our world and they have three days to stop it. As soon as the Ghostbusters IP issue is resolved, the whole team will go back to Ghostbusters."

So there you have it. It's their own engine. It's real. And it's on hold. Columbia Pictures, get ready for some hate-mail. (Or is it Sony that holds the IP? If so, I'm sure they won't like a XBOX360 title, no, no, needs to be a PS3 EXCLUSIVE!!)

Attack of the Show just showed the youtube video on G4. They said zootfly was working on it secretly but liscensing rights might hold it back from being released. But they also said it looks like a fan made video.

Their whole show looks like a fan made video. I've seen podcasts with better production.

Good news and bad news. The bad news is the youtube videos have been removed. The good news is that I got my game informer in the mail yesterday and it says Dan akaroyd told the canadian paper the edmonton sun that he will reprise his role as Ray Stanz in the upcoming Ghostbusters game. So, it looks like this game is still a go. Lets hope that they get to keep the character likeness, or even get all the actors to reprise their roles. This is probably the closest we will get to a ghostbusters 3.

I know that print mags are behind due to publishing times, but this is kind of old news, even for print standards.

I'm going to give Game Informer the benefit of the doubt and assume that this story was originally run right before their deadline so that they didnt have enough time to fit it in and it had to hold off for another whole month.

Also that sucks about YouTube (Thanks SONY) but I'm sure theres a mirror out there somewhere (I won't be the one to scrounge it up though).

I didn't notice that, but I don't go there regularily. I also found out they are making that Ghostbusters 3 movie, or they say they are going to. It is gonna be CG, cause Bill Murray don't want to look that much older in the sequel or something.
