Hi, in my ramblings through the web I noticed a particular group of entries in the release list of N64 games: a bunch of items on a support
which was neither a cart (standard n64 cartridge), nor a disk (for the n64dd), but a strange 'S'

a bit of research give me the answer: in '98 it was released Mario no Photopie, a sort of program which allowed to create your own pictures on digital backgrounds and decorate them (as in those print club machines that were quite common in Japan some time ago) using your n64!

here is a picture of the box

in addition to this cart "Mario no Photopie", several Smart Cards were released (the 'S' media above), which I guess were used to provide additional backgrounds and special effects...

examples of these cards:

has anyone additional info on how this device worked? or links to pages which describe it? or corrections about my guesses?

Huh, I had never heard of this game before you had mentioned it. Hell, I thought you had misspelled something in the title.

There's a brief article about the game here:

Honestly, I was surprised to find that on wikipedia. Apparently there were only three games supporting the smartcard media. Judging by the obscurity, it ended up being a colossal failure.

Wow thanks for the wikipedia. I had no clue what it was when I first looked at the thread. This game seems very interesting. I guess in ways its kinda like Pokemon Snap and the sticker print outs that were at Blockbusters.

the different spelling made me miss the wikipedia link... anyway iirc there were more than 3 smart cards released, but I think most of them consisted of simple graphic effects and no 'brand' (as bomberman or yoshi) was involved...

i'll try to dig in my bookmarks if i can find the page with the (japanese) list of smart cards

The sd cards were pink!?

I wonder what other applications a hacker could use that SD cartridge reader for.
