It's a port of a game Elite released on the C64, ZX Spectrum, and Amstrad CPC.

Seems like it's not so much a port, as he said all of the levels in his build are different than any of those PC versions. Awesome find indeed!

Awesome, that used to be one of my favorites as a kid.

That first Backyard level is nothing "new", though. It's from the C64 version, which was different from the others for some reason.

Left C64, right NES

Regardless of my thoughts on the Exerion II thread, I do really appreciate that you've released this. Thank you.

I've never played the computer ports of this, so this is my first ever experience with Hoppin' Mad. This is one of the strangest games I've ever played. This game is also ridiculously difficult. I can't even pass level 1 unless I cheat with save states. Any tips?

I can get to level 15 without much trouble at all, it probably helps that I've been the only person playing it the last year. I'll upload a video soon showing some techniques on how to play to the later stages.

Mark, thanks for releasing this.

So there are at least 15 levels? That's great. The 3rd level was incomplete...does this mean that all the levels after Level 3 were added by the tech wizards who repaired Level 3, or was there just a glitch in Level 3 that wouldn't let you get further in the game? Can't wait to get into this one.

The 3rd level lacked any enemies and the game looped after that, much in the same way that Donkey Kong does. We added enemies to the 3rd level, added an extra cut scene, did a palette swap on player 2, and set the level indicator to continue to increase after each loop. For example, after level 3 you return to level 1, but the level indicator indicates it as level 4.

It's definitely a fun little game and there doesn't seem to be anything like it on the system from what I can tell. I'm glad you guys are enjoying it!

Thanks, this is pretty cool, especially the added content. Have you thought about releasing the unchanged copy?

Although I've considered it, it's unlikely. I have taken screen caps of the original unedited ROM (all of which are found on this site). As far as getting an accurate picture of what the game was in it's original state before I got a hold of it, those should do well.

This is something I plan on doing with all of my releases. I will take pictures of the ROM before any changes are made which can be archived by those who wish to preserve what they were.
