I had assumed most people who followed Phantasy Star IV's development in 1992 and 1993 had read this article, 'The Making of Phantasy Star IV", because it was in EGM. Then I realized, this article is actually somewhat obscure. Many people actually haven't read it at all. The website Fringes of Algo had part 2 of the article, but they were missing part 1. I managed to download the January 1993 EGM which had the first part. So now, you can read the entire two-part feature, since both parts are together for the first time on the internet.

Cool, thanks for posting this. I actually did read it back when it was published, but haven't seen it since.

Since I have not played through PSIV (blasphemy, yes , I know), but am a huge fan of 1 and 2, can anyone point out to me how these articles show difference from the final release?

Character names and abilities, primarily. Rika a physically weak magic user? Hardly! Also there are a lot of things in the first ("pre-programming") article that sound different, but some of those I'd chalk up to translation - ie the bit about only five playable characters (there's a maximum of five at one time, but more besides) or the part about Kuran and Zelan being "moons" (I'm guessing the original quote in Japanese mentioned something about "satellites", which the translator took to mean natural satellites).

If you're really interested in PSIV development, you ought to check out the various versions that DRX released in his massive prototype release.

So for the most part they are pretty similar-sounding? For some reason, I always thought the old EGM articles displayed a wildly different game.

Oh boy...I'm not sure I'll ever have the time in this lifetime to go through all those, let alone the PSIVs. Anyone have any input on what the proto PSIVs showed for differences?
