I had heard that a Mario 3D proto was made for the SNES in a different forum, and I wanted to ask the experts if this was true. Any info that you guys could shed on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

I've never heard of this myself, but I kind of doubt it. Anyone? |

I've never heard of such a thing, either.
Maybe some magazines just misunderstood the message when Super Mario Kart was announced... or maybe Super Mario RPG, with its isometric worlds. |

I've heard of this... it apparently used the Super FX 2 chip, but the project was cancelled in favour of N64 development. I've only seen it in one magazine, though, so it could have just been some guy making shit up. |

There's this guy on this thread at Cherryrom's saying that he knows for sure that there's a proto because he knows some hardcore collector that verified it's existance and that he has even seen pics of the game on some Swedish magazine called Superplay.
Anyways, that news caught my attention, since every single gamer at the time would have heard about a 3D Mario game in development for the SNES (especially during a time when people actually looked forward to 3D games). But I haven't heard anything about it, and being that you guys specialize in the rare and unknown and haven't heard about an extremely sought after Mario game either, then most likely this guys either been badly misinformed, or just talking shit.
But anyways, thanks for the feedback. |

Yeah, I read a fair share of gaming mags back in the day, and I don't remember anything about a SNES 3D Mario either. It could exist, but I would tend to doubt it too.
I was rather amused by the fact that the guy is like "Its existence is not up for discussion" despite the fact he has no screenshots, scans of the article, or any other hard evidence to back it up. Even some screenshots they give to the gaming mags are mock-ups, so I would say it's highly questionable. |

If you could narrow down the time when the story was out and about, I've got Nintendo Pravdas from SMB3 through Blast Corps. I could dig though them. Maybe there's something in there.
Semi OT, are there any other Mario protos or unreleased games known of? |

The only 3-D Pre-N64 Mario games I can think of are Yoshi's Safari and Mario's Time Machine [that thing had a surfing area, I believe]. Or it could've been Mario is Missing. |

There was also Mario Land for the Virtual Boy. Ended up getting scrapped, and Nintendo made what was supposed to be a mini game within it into a stand alone title. Mario Clash.
There's also Donkey Kong Music Education for the Famicom. Some pics of it are available on Skrybe's page:

Don't know if the screens are from a prototype, or if they're just mock ups. I really wish that game had come out though. I love Nintendo's early Nes titles. |

hello, first post.
anyway, i can remember [i'll have to dig out the issue -from around 94-95 'ish] reading in SuperPlay [the original UK publication] an article where one of the staff members got a look round Nintendo's HQ, and being told that a Snes Mario 3D had been canned in favour of a new 3D Mario game for the proposed 'Project Reality' [ie. N64] console, but that the Snes incarnation had been heavily developed and that even test cartridges had been made, which supposedly lucky members of staff have in their possesion..
i'll look for the article and post it later [when i've got time  ].
great site by the way. |

Hey, link to the whole article. It's an interesting read in spite of mediocre proofreading/copy editing. |

There's also "Return of Donkey Kong" for the NES, which may or may not had been the basis for Donkey Kong '94. |

Our 100th board member, ladies and "gentlemen." This calls for a celebration of some sort, which I'm too lazy to actually think through. |

Well, I have an issue of the swedish Super Play that has the following picture in an article about SNES...
...with the following quote attached to it (translated from Swedish):
"Prototype carts for Super NES are getting harder and harder to find. Many are also missing labels, so you shouldn't have too high expectations before you've put them in your console. A copy of the three-dimensional Super Mario-game is deffinitely invaluable."
Could this be the cart? |

Now we're getting somewhere. Does anyone know what is printed on the label? |

What's printed on it? It's just a blank version of the label that's commonly seen on Super Famicom prototypes. |
