I was looking through my rom folder and realized something... there doesn't seem to be a Japanese version of Snake's Revenge!

I remember that in Metal Gear Solid, there was no mention of the game at all. They mentioned Metal Gear, and Solid Snake [MSX]... why is that? Was this game not intended for release in Japan, or something?

Apparently the game was made specifically for the US market. I don't think a Japanese release was planned. The game was however made by Konami of Japan, as indicated by the credits.

Hideo Kojima had no involvment in Snake's Revenge though as far as I know.

There were actually several games by Konami of Japan that didn't get released in Japan.

Batman Returns
Zen Intergalactic Ninja
Mission Impossible
Rollergames
TMNT Tournament Fighters
Lone Ranger
Base Wars Cyber Stadium
Q Bert (Was announced for FDS but canned)
Contra Force (Was to be released in Japan as Arc Hound. Would explain why the game has barely anything to do with Contra.)

Yeah. Otaku lamers constantly hate the game on principle for being a "fake" entry to the series.

"OMG KOJIMA SAN DID NOT APPROVE OF THIS GAME!!!@@!!!"

It's really not that bad a game, especially when you consider how many people always say it's terrible.

Kojima's actually said he really likes the game. :)

Sure, it's not great, but it's just as good as the NES Metal Gear.

It's amazing. One of the few Konami games that Konami fanboys hate, turns out to be one that I think is a work of pure genious. The music, the amazing intro that makes me all jumpy of excitement.

The game is just so well put toghether. The betrayals, the excitement. I love the train part and the roles played by Snake's co-stars.

I started playing it a bit ago (I'm going through NES games I never beat in my youth... vacations suck) and yeah, I like the game. I never could get into Metal Gear, and this is a fun game overall.

Too bad the damn script is FUCKING COMPRESSED, otherwise I'd translate it to Spanish. Eheh.

I think the game is hated more of what it's not (that being the real Metal Gear 2) than that of what it is. I've heard critiques in the past, and while I'll admit that it's not quite as good as Metal Gears 1 or it's MSX sequel, I don't really think it's a bad game in the least bit.

I thought it actually was released in Japan under a totally different name, but I could be mistaken.

I agree that Snake's Revenge is underrated. It's not as good as Metal Gear 2 for MSX, but it's a decent adventure game.

That bit in the manual about Jennifer being rumored to be the younger sister of Ginger from Gilligan's Island was beyond stupid, even by Konami of America's pitiful manual standards.

Christ. That's really fucking dumb.

EVERYONE knows Mary Ann was the only one who would've had a sister worth saving.

Someone needs to scan the drawing of Drac's fangs soaking in Fixodent. Also, great Romanization of "Warakiya". While technically a correct interpretation of the Katakana, Wallachia is a real Romanian town :(

Maybe the Japanese developers wanted it that way; like they were thinking of Wallachia when they wrote it or something? It's not the first time Japanese games have used real towns for character settings.

Nate, that's what I was getting at. It IS supposed to be that real town; the American translators were apparently unaware the town existed and simply chose a Romanization that looked good to them.

... It's "Wallachia"? I wrote it "Walachia" in the translation... great. Dammit!

Edit:
Even worse, I wrote "nation", not town... *bashes head on desk*

Actually, it seems both are acceptable spellings...which is kinda weird. And it's technically a "principality"; that is, a large region within a country.

[edit]Also, it seems that the three principalities of Romania were once independent countries, more than likely during the period Akumajo Densetsu is set in. So you're clear :) (yay Google)

I'm glad to know that I'm not only one who enjoyed Snake's Revenge.

It's funny that fanboys diss this game for not being a Kojima game, when Kojima himself said that not only he enjoyed it, it was what made him do Metal Gear 2 on the MSX in the first place, which in turn was the basis for Metal Gear Solid. It's pretty arguable that without Snake's Revenge, there probably wouldn't be any of the subsequent Metal Gear games.

I'm thinking Snake's Revenge was planned at some point or another as a Famicom version of Metal Gear II, before Kojima himself decided to do the true Metal Gear 2 for the MSX (oddly enough, the guy that did Snake's Revenge gave him the idea). I'm surprised they didn't release this as Metal Gear Gaiden over there, since Konami has always milk a franchise whenever they got the chance (see Castlevania, Beatmania and Tokimeki Memorial).

<spoiler>Big Boss turning into a ten-foot cyborg in the end might had been too much for some, but they can't complain after the whole Ocelot/Liquid arm fiasco.</spoiler>

I personally didn't like the game that much. The storyline wasn't all there, and at some points, rather funny (Higharolla Kockamamie, Vermon KaTaffy... WTF?!?), plus the side scrolling sections were annoying and pointless. There was a lot less emphasis on stealth in this game than in any of the other Metal Gear games, and there were other little details in the game (bright orange camo suit for one) that didn't help it much either.

Don't get me wrong, it's not as bad as the Konami fanboys make it out to be, but it's still an inferior game to the first Metal Gear and it's definitely the worst one in the whole series.

Yeah, because I can't think of twelve thousand other games with plot twists as stupid as that. Come on. :P

Yeah, but Kockamamie and CaTaffy are only mentioned in the manual and not in the game, so it's clearly was not part of the game designer's intentions and thus, not part of the in-game storyline.

I thought Snake's Revenge was just as good as the first Metal Gear game and definitely a huge improvement over the rather mediocre NES port of the same (which Kojima definitely disliked). I don't get why people think this is more action-oriented. Aside from the fact that you start with a handgun, you're still pretty screwed if you're discovered. The red camouflage suit never bothered me at all (Contra anyone?).

Yeah, I just tried putting a spoiler tag in my post, but this forum doesn't support them it seems. I'll try to be more careful next time.
