Has anyone tried to translate the original Princess Tomato?

It's an old computer game, and it's way different than the NES one (and has some really interesting, sort of good art!):

Apparently input is already English, which should help a lot I would think! I was going to post this on the RomHacking.net forums but they don't allow requests there. I allow ROM hacking requests on my own forums however, especially if they are from me.

EDIT: Oh, and if anyone has already started/is thinking about it, I'd love to help with the script.

Yeah! There's only a hint of religion in the NES one, when you can get Percy to pray to the apple temple. It looks like the original explores the vegetable mythos a little deeper.

There's something really appealing about the art! It's Japanese but...not!

Cool, that style reminds me a little of some of the Crayon Shin-Chan animation from the mid-90's.

RHDN likes to keep track of them on the Translations Request List on DataCrystal, which is now hosted by RHDN.

Those screens look like really amazing MSPaint art.

For me the weirdest thing about Princess Tomato wasn't the banana bandits or the pepper police or whatever. It was the way the game put a few human characters into a world of talking fruits and vegetables. I remember one part where you're introduced to Princess Tomato's sister, and she's a human girl named Lisa. And I don't think that was ever explained.

At the time, I put it down to the game's sense of humor. But maybe the English translation cut some dialogue that explains everything. Or maybe I just don't remember the game that well.

I don't think this has anything to do with the computer version of Princess Tomato, as there aren't any human characters in those screens.

Yeah! I'm really fascinated by the original, looking at these shots. No humans at all, things done in different order, the entire town of Sopville (the Western town near the end, with the bar and all the brainwashed citizens) doesn't seem to be there at all, and Sir Cucumber actually uses his sword!

I never played the NES version but I can read Japanese so if you can get a script dump and don't mind doing continuity check/editing/hacking I can translate it for you.

Being a fan of the NES port, I'm interested at looking into hacking this. I've found the game but know nothing about PC 8801 emulation. Can anyone recommend an emulator?

M88 seems to be the preferred emulator, homepage here:

http://www.retropc.net/cisc/m88/download.html

English download (unless it's hidden on the homepage somewhere?) here:

http://www.underground-gamer.com/wiki/index.php/Recommended_Emulators_%28NEC%29

Is the M88 version the one in the screenshots? I ask because some versions have a smaller color palette and look kind of lousy, but I don't know my vintage Japanese computers enough to know which version would be the superior one.

Oops, somehow I misread something and thought that the 8801 version was all that existed. Looking at the Japanese Wikipedia page and see there are several versions, so I'll do some more looking. I imagine the MSX version would be the easiest to hack/emulate. The windows version might be the most interesting, though.
