Skrybe scanned these images for me over a year ago, but I completely forgot about them until this morning. Evidence of the SNES mouse game, Mario & Wario, being readied for a US release comes from a contest on Kellogg's cereal boxes, of all places. The box art is clearly a mock-up, as I doubt they would want Wario to look like this. As a bonus, there is also a mock-up of the Yoshi's Safari box, which is quite a bit different from the final version.

Maybe I'm missing something, but why does the contest assume 14 letters are collected? Aren't only eight needed to win? (am I'm assuming that they printed exactly 6,000 of one of the letters)
Is there a particular reason for the dumb "skill" question, or is just an excuse to deny awarding a prize? |

Some states in the US require a skills challenge be successfully completed in addition to random drawing for sweepstakes wins for some reason, I'm assuming Canada and/or some of its provinces are the same way. |

The skill testing question is required to get around the laws regarding gambling. |

Must be for some places where having a "free entry" alternate entry doesn't qualify (in that case sending them a request for an empty box). |

Someday I ought to write a big post about my thoughts on enhancing scans of tiny images, and how even though I've added information to this image that wasn't there, this to me is more "preservation" of the original intent than leaving it as-is.
Not my best work, and my source image wasn't all that big, but I think it works as a proof of concept:

If I had time, I would do a full restoration like I did with the Star Fox 2 box. Of course, I already have a backlog of about 10 prototype ROM images to release, so that is going to be way in the future. |

I have a pretty simple methodology:
1. Scan BIG. As big as computer can handle.
2. Adjust the levels so that the blacks are black and the whites are white.
3. Gaussian blur just enough so that the halftone is either gone or barely there.
4. Shrink it down to your target size
5. Unsharp mask to sharpen your blurry picture up a little
Depending on the image and how crazy I am that night this either takes me two minutes or like a half hour. |

Wow, nice work cleaning it up. Kind of odd how they took a Canadian Mario Paint box as a template for the mockup (assuming it's Canadian, due to the English and French "Includes the SNES Mouse and Mousepad" text).
Has the prototype Yoshi's Safari box been scanned with that quality as well? |

I assume that Skrybe still has the box, perhaps he can make a larger scan. |

Yeah, I've still got it, but it's packed away at my parents' place right now, and it may be a while before I can get to it. I'll scan it when I can get my hands on it, though. |
