NESTICLE!?
Nah, I'm just fucking with you.
I've been years outside of this scene and need some advice.
Where does FCE Ultra stand these days?
In before google search... the results seem to be from 1998 on this topic. Any help compadres?
Save your sarcasm for your butt. |

If you're mostly about playing games, Nestopia seems to be the norm these days.
If you're about accuracies and want more features to develop games use Nintendulator.
(At least one version of) FCE Ultra is quite popular for hackers and developers because of its powerful debugging tools, but don't rely on it, as it's not as accurate as the two aforementioned ones (pretty bad in some cases too AS FAR AS I KNOW). |

I'd recommend Nestopia if you're not developing for the NES. It's not only more user friendly, but also the games will look more accurate to the real thing with the correct aspect ratio and the NTSC filter applied.
I really don't know if Nintendulator is technically more accurate than Nestopia, but I'd sure like some info on that. |

Nintendulator is still under active development, and thus emulates a number of hardware quirks that were only recently discovered. It's way less aesthetically pleasing or user-friendly than Nestopia, though, and the added emulation accuracy probably only matters if you're developing games or playing one of the very few games that rely on the aforementioned quirks (one of the Indiana Jones games). |

Another vote here for Nestopia. If you just want to play the games, it's the way to go. |

I recently ran into issues with Nestopia throwing a fit over bogus ROM header issues. I switched to FCE Ultra X and have no regrets. |

If you want to use an emulator on the Mac, Fceu or Nestopia.
These two have been ported to the GP2X and PSP and Nintendo DS as well, so they seem to be the best. |

jackalneo! :D
For what it's worth, I still use FCE Ultra. It's familiar to me so I've stuck with it. |

Yep. I mostly use with FCEUX because it's pretty much the ultimate NES ROM hacking tool.
That and WindHex are just about all I need (well, aside from custom programs to handle stuff like compression or text dumping/insertion).
(I use WindHex for hex editing as well as the tile editor, since FCEUX doesn't do tile editing. Perhaps intentionally to avoid the days of crappy Nesticle ROM hacks.) |
