Hope there's no problem posting about a fundraiser here, but I figured this would interest a few people. One is being held over at ASSEMbler to release four debug & beta builds of Conker's Bad Fur Day and Perfect Dark!
Super cool stuff, would be the first Rareware N64 betas to get out there. The ECTS build of Conker has some interesting things in there, most notably a removed cutscene. |

Just so I'm clear on this... he's not actually selling the protos, right? Just if people send him $2500 he'll release the roms? Has something like this been done before? |

This isn't new, even for us. We've been doing this sort of thing behind the scenes for like a decade now.
...paying for a ROM, I mean, not holding one hostage. |

Yeah, that's sort of what I meant. Hell, I myself gave up my Crystalis proto cartridge just to have a rom of the DuckTales proto over 10 years ago.
This particular instance feels kind of kickstarter-inspired, but shadier. |

Nah. These public fundraisers for ROMs predate Kickstarter by several years. We've never done one and we probably never will. |

That's Borman putting out stuff. He's done a lot of freebies before. I don't see the problem with him trying to return whatever he's put out for stuff he's releasing (+He hosts a pretty neat site; Past to Present). Most likely, whatever people give him goes straight towards buying/acquiring/negotiating for other stuff to dump 'n' release too.
Pardon my severe and disgusting lack of hatred and fury in my post. |

Yeah, and there's that too. But is anyone besides shawnphase, who as far as I know has never had direct involvement in releasing a ROM before, actually angry here? |

Perfect Dark is my most wanted N64 prototype ROM. It would be more tempting if PerfectHead facemapping was proven functional in the proto, but it seems thus far that Borman is unable to verify it. |

I have no problem with the fundraiser, per se, but I would rather spend the money buying my own prototypes for release. I do have a box full of prototypes I need to get through still... |

In defense of ROM hostage taking, there isn't that big of a difference between:
a) kickstarting $X, then buying a proto from a collector for $X
b) buying a proto from a collector for $X, then kickstarting $X
Further, public fundraising can take ages, some collectors are not going to wait ages for you to come up the cash.
Those Rare protos have been around for a while (and they were quite expensive IIRC), so Borman didn't just find them on the street and decide to charge $2500 for them. |

I'm not angry about it, I'd just never seen it done this way before. |
