IIRC, the SNES *was* originally supposed to be backwards compatible with the NES. Judging by the hardware, it looks like they took that idea pretty far before scrapping it (backwards-compatible CPU, identical controller hardware, same screen resolution, old NES-style joypad registers...heck, some old demo group even ported some NES games straight to the SNES, minus sound). Of course, they might have just been shooting for an easier learning curve for NES developers... |

From what I've heard, the TriStar/Super 8 was mostly a Famiclone designed to plug into an SNES cart slot. |

And on another note, I must recall the time I tried to buy one of those GC/GBA connection cables.
I must have spent several times trying to explain to the store guy what I was talking about as he kept repeating to me that GBA carts won't work in the GC disc slot (No kidding?).
And showing the guy a GC package promoting the connection feature didn't help... |

Quote: | The point still stands about GBA support though. If you're going to do something, don't do it halfway. By the argument of "they saved money by not including another processor", they could have saved even more by not bothering with GBA support. |
But...
Doesn't the GBA use a ARM7 CPU, while the DS uses both the GBA ARM7 and an additional ARM9 ?
So basicly, I don't think it was a big different in production prices to include the GBA support...
"w00t, I saved $1.99 on my DS 'cause I bought the NON-GBA one"
KingMike...
I've been in that situation myself...
I went off to pick up a couple of those so we could play Four Swords (4player) and Crystal Chronicles 4player again.
'cause we somehow lost a couple of our link-up cables between the release of CC (PAL) and FS (NTSC)
I was attacked by the ĂƒÂ¼ber gaming expert that got called into action when the old hag behind the counter had to give up searching for the item I could see with my own eyes, point at, say exactly between which other tools it was placed and so on...
The "gaming expert" that got called into action frustrated me so much when he said I needed a N64 + Pokemon Collosseum to do the linking, so I went behind the counter and picked down the items myself.
(Random Fact: I'VE NEVER set my foot in that store again) |

What great timing! I just got an old magazine with pictures of what look like the protype SFC with a Famicom compatibility switch! Posted on my page here: http://disgruntleddesigner.com/chrisc/secrets3.html#fcsfc |

Nope. The GBA has an ARM7 -and- another CPU to run GBC/GBA games. I forget what kind of CPU it is. And then there's the physical switch to boot the system into 5v mode (necessary for GB/GBC games)... Maybe this mode wasn't possible in the DS, or maybe there were battery / power problems, I dunno.
I still don't think it would've been much of a problem to include the third CPU in the system. HOWEVER, I did think of another reason why they decided against it: CART SIZES.
You know how if you plug a GB/GBC cart on an SP system you no longer have a really small sized-system anymore? You have half a GB cart sticking out. Since I only own GB/GBC carts, this is bothersome. I guess they did not add support to prevent the DS from becoming even wider by about an inch, since the system is already relatively big to begin with. A valid reason, though not one I agree with. |

Perhaps not, as far as the CPU is concerned, but I'm sure the extra cartridge port for GBA games added to production costs.

Neither do I. Yeah, cart size could be a factor. |

I updated her rank for you.
Also, Feel the Magic XY/XX has sold like shit, despite it being the best DS game that doesn't feature Mario. It's also on sale for $24.99 at Best Buy, so go buy it. |

Here are some sales numbers from December I stole, because sometimes I like to pretend that this forum talks about videogames:
1 NDS SUPER MARIO 64 DS 437,331
2 NDS SPIDER-MAN:THE MOVIE2 201,522
3 NDS MADDEN NFL 2005 89,615
4 NDS ASPHALT: URBAN GT 84,145
5 NDS THE URBZ:SIMS IN CITY 76,665
6 NDS RIDGE RACER DS 54,728
7 NDS MR. DRILLER: DRILL 30,823
8 NDS TIGER WOODS PGA 2005 28,829
9 NDS FEEL THE MAGIC: XY/XX 28,508
10 NDS PING PALS 23,325
11 NDS SPRUNG 11,431
I know Sprung sucks and all, but it was massively outsold by PING PALS?!
I hear that Urbz is actually a solid game, believe it or not. I think I may pick it up today. |

Yay, I contributed to Sprung's craptacular sales. It did indeed suck.
The Urbz is great. I've never played a Sims game before, so maybe that's why I don't find it to be a chore. It gets a solid couple hours of play from me everyday, and there's always something new to do. It doesn't really make great use of the system's features, but it's fun. I'd say it's worth purchasing. |

Yeah, not the smartest decision. I figured it'd be more non-linear than it was, but most of the scenarios could be played one way and one way only. Big disappointment. |

You were. About the only system that actually translates games based on which language it has been set to is the Neo Geo Pocket (Color). My point was just that people should stop whining about importing. The system doesn't need to be modded, and playing games in japanese is fucking easy. |
