On one of my happy funtime pirating bootlegging sprees (don't ask), I came across an ISO for Tobal 2 US version, expecting "US version" to be bullshitese for "Japanese version". After firing it up, it turns out it really is in English.

Now I keep an eye on the translation community close enough to know that no one has finished any translations for Tobal 2. In fact, there's no one working on it. (Come to think of it, there's not even all that many PS1 translation projects even going on! And the ones that are undergoing are still unfinished, except one of the Cotton games)

I don't remember this game even being announced for US release long enough for it to be canned, and I'm pretty sure the game never came out in English. What I'm looking at though looks like an almost entirely English version of the game (the opening still has Japanese subtitles). Anyone know the story about this one?

And on an entirely different note, anyone know why every import fatty wants to rant on and on why it's such a huge sin that this game was never released in America as if it was the greatest game ever because it's not that great!

Wasn't the Tobal 2 translation done by Hairraiser (Infinite Lupine Translations) like 2 years ago?
(Same guy who also translated some sort of Vampire dating sim for the PSX)

O_o holy shit, that's the one! I guess you can ignore this.

You don't find very many translated PSX games out there, that's why this one kind of shocked me.

It was OK, the only reason it has a cult status is because people like to bitch about how we we're constantly robbed about the best Japanese games, and this happens to be a decent game that we didn't see.

Also, Tobal 2 was pretty impressive back in 1997, when the best 3-D fighters we had were Soul Blade and Fighting Vipers, and a lot of the game's fan following is just a holdover from that era. Tobal had a lot of fun extras, too. The playable characters number well past a hundred, since you can pick any defeated enemy from the quest mode.

But yeah, it's decent. Not really great.

Well, that ends the debate as to it's merits, doesn't it?
