hello,I'm looking for some info about a hack:
years ago I used to rent a famicom cartridge called
"mario 8",that of course, was not such a thing,it was another game
hacked to have mario instead of the original sprite.
The fact is that I loved that game, but I never knew its original title,
and,I checked the full nes set (about 10500 roms) and it's not there Sad
(I mean,I checked for a mario 8 rom,I still haven't finished yet trying
all the games rom by rom hoping to find the original one,I'm
doing this since a week ago and I'm going insane!,in a good way
of course, going insane because of nes is not a bad thing Smile ).
The game was a sidescroller game like adventure island 3 or
joe & mac,(funny, there's a hack of joe & mac called "mario 16" and I used to rent it too!).
it was a by-the-book one with different stages and
bosses and you went jumping, killing the bad guys and getting
power ups and stuff like that.
It was an amazing game in terms of fun and playability,
(and graphics and sound were good too,for its time).
I remember diamonds were the equivalent of mario's coins,
the guy's weapon was a hammer (or an axe?),in the label
of the cartridge there was a picture of the original character
and it had something white in his head,I don't remember if
it was a beard, his hair o a hat. (it was a lot of years ago),
and I remember mountains and waterfalls in the background
of one of the levels, logs and trees too,(the typical forest level,
I remember an ice level, and I bet there was a desert and a
cave level too,like I said,it was a by-the-book sidescroller,
but I'm not sure).
Hmm,think of the (yuck) sonic first level background.
well,something like that.
I wish I could be more specific,but that's all what I remember
from the game.
no,it's not contra,it's not a megaman game,it's not an
adventure island game,it's not a mario game,it's not joe & mac,
it's not any of the classic/well known games.
ah,almost forgot, the bad guys werent soldiers with guns
like in contra, they were creatures, like in smb. (not the smb creatures,it's just an example of the kind of non-humanoid
bad guys).

if anybody identifies the game (like I said,I wish I could be more
specific) or at least thinks of a title that sounds similar,
I'll really appreciate it if you help me!.

bye!.

Load up a ROM called "Armadillo" and report back to us. Is that your game?

I have that cart, I think. CopyNES is still being tinkered with. I'll try to get it dumped eventually. It uses a non-standard mapper.

no,it's not armadillo,I'm sure there was not a modern city, and
the guy doesn't look like the character of the game.
(well, judging by what I remember of the label picture and I think there was some power up animation that had not the mario sprite
replacing the original and I saw the guy there).
Let alone the playability, the game was like adventure island 3
in terms of speed and controls I think.
Hmm,I'm not sure and I don't want to say a misleding clue,but
the white thing in his head maybe were wings from a
winged hat.

I've done a bit of searching and it all seems to indicate it's a pirate original. Remarkably, all the opinions I've read emphasize that the game is great.
I'm guessing waiting for Mr. Merp's report is your best bet.

These Marios I found:

Mario 4 = Armadillo
Mario 9 = Adventure Island 2
Mario 16 = Joe & Mac
Mario 14 = I have no idea what the original may be but it's a fun little ninja game. Could it be "it"...? Nesworld has got a page with screenshots:

Kid Niki 3; Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 3

You're right according to a Whirlpool article by some Mr. Sardius.

Gotta love watching the whole opening in the hack.
When the title screen appears after the opening, Niki slides across the screen, and once he's stopped, then Mario's head just pops on Niki's body. Not quite Rockman 5 Pirate, but still quite amusing.
(unless there's more than one version, I know this was in the multicart ROM on TheRedEye's site).

Axes? Diamonds?

It's DonDokoDon 2.

I had the exact same hack, Mario 8 for the Famicom.

I bought it in South Africa, where did you get yours?

(goodlord, we own the exact same Famicom hack, based on the sickeningly large amount that exist... isn't that a bit rare?)

Still, DonDokoDon 2 rocks. Go forth and enjoy it.

EDIT:
Play it, for free, here:

Apologies if linking that was bad

A Java NES emulator with ROMs loaded from the server? Neat. My computer'll never run it, but still - neat.

Great! I can't believe I came across a Don Doko Don 2 pic the other day and didn't mind it at all.

If Pelger ever came back his search will be complete I bet.

There was another site that was trying to do that with other systems.

http://www.everyvideogame.com/

Last I heard though, companies were trying to shut him down. So I'm not sure how well everything still works.

But hey! What better way to waste time at work?

THANK YOU!!!!,THAT'S THE GAME!!!,NOW I'M HAPPY Very Happy
My quest is over and now I can play the game the whole daaaaay!!

By the way,I'm in Uruguay, and I used to rent the Mario 8 cartridge. I wonder what the dude from the store did with the cartridges after the store went bankrupt.

Remember my "check out every rom from the full set" project?,well,I was very advanced, only 500mb of roms left to check, but the hard disk I had collapsed!!,and since I was doing it in a random way (as opposed to doing it in alphabetical order),I was not able to resume it like "ok,I'll get the full set again,I completed up to the roms starting with T so I'll resume from that",I was forced to start over again!. Today I downloaded the nes full set again but before starting to check the roms one by one AGAIN,I decided to check here just in case,I'm glad I did!!.

Anyway, thanks everybody for the replies and thank you JSzczep for telling me the name of the game!
Bye!!.

LAUGHING OUT LOUD,what happened is that I checked the option to get a mail notification every time a reply was posted, but I should have disabled it by mistake in my second post or something like that, and I never got more notification mails after the first ones about the first replies,so I assumed I had no luck with the "ask in a forum" approach and I thought "I'll eventually find it if I keep checking all roms in the full set one by one" and blabla.
anyway,I'm gald I checked here before trying to check all the roms in the full set again.
btw,I already did something like that trying to find an arcade game,it was xain d'sleena, but I didn't know that,I only remembered the gameplay and how it looked,so I went to a mame roms site and I started to check all the roms. when I was by letter C I got bored and I decided to check backwards starting from Z. gee,I was lucky the game starts with X Smile
now I'm doing something like that again with the snes full set,but this time just to keep the interesting stuff and delete what I don't want. (I already had my "snes pack",but it was lost in The Great Disaster (tm),aka "when my previous hard disk collapsed and I lost what I had not burned yet").

edit: why do the word "great" appears as "GRATE"? an ongoing joke about a game quote like "YOU'RE WINNER!" or "all your base are belong to us"?
