It was released in the US, just in insanely limited quantities. I've only seen an actual machine once in my life, at the GameWorks in Seattle (I think?).

The game was announced for the SEGA Saturn, but cancelled. It was released in Japanese arcades under the name of Sonic Championship, and it did get a arcade release in other countries. I can remember it being on the British TV show Gamesmaster once.

I can confirm BMF's sighting at Gameworks in Seattle a number of years ago. I played it. Not all that exciting, but it was sonic and it deserved a play.

I've seen an arcade machine of it in Ontario, California (at Gameworks) and one in Las Vegas, Nevada (also at Gameworks).

The one in Ontario is long gone, and I'm not sure about the one in Vegas. I saw it there around Christmas 2004 so uh it may be gone

What is this "Gameworks"? An arcade chain? Man, I'd just settle for a single machine that has nothing to do with Daytona or DDR.

Smeg, you have Dave and Busters (or something like that) out there?

Think Chuck e' Cheese's but less kids, and they serve beer.

I've played it once at some lazer tag place in Dallas once, way back when I was in high school. Back in 1997...

8 years have passed, and I am now solidly convinced that I'm no better off now than I was then. Who'da thunk that baby boomers would use their peak earning years to buy homes they'll never use just so they could collectively drive prices out of ranges their children could afford.

Oh, yeah, Sonic? It was an okay-ish game. It felt like a bit of a cash in on the fighting craze, but in a good way, like the Neo-Geo was.
