With the Nintendo 64's flagship title Super Mario 64 taking the video game world by storm it was obvious that a sequel would be forthcoming. Unfortunately the sequel took its place in video game lore as a cancelled game for the Nintendo 64 and 64DD addon system. It was cancelled very early on in its development. So early, in fact, that only a single demo level was completed.

In a Nintendo Power interview with Nintendo programming master Shigeru Miyamoto in 1999, the legendary producer said that he had Mario and Luigi running around in a single demo level that would eventually become Super Mario 64 2. His first goal in the new game was to make it multiplayer (which was an aspect that the first game lacked). So that's what happened first: a two player demo level.

In the end that demo level is all that happened. Miyamoto said that he left the demo on his desk for over a year but just didn't know what to do next with it. Eventually the idea was canned, but rumor has it some of the ideas behind the aborted game popped up in the GameCube's Super Mario Sunshine and the Nintendo DS's Super Mario 64 DS.

Sounds interesting, maybe Miamoto used this idea for Mario&Luigi:Superstar Saga ?

Can somebody scan that article ?

That seems wrong. I remember the quote, it was like "I have this two-player version of Super Mario 64 sitting on my desk that I don't know what to do with."

From IGN news (and Assembler Wink)

Quote:
"Super Mario 64 2 is set for a release this fall in Japan -- at least according to Famitsu's sources. There are reportedly plenty of improvements and changes, not least of which you can control several characters, instead of just Mario. Miyamoto-san has, reportedly, been touting an early ROM of the game about, and yes, Luigi makes it in. It should be noted that Miyamoto has repeatedly denied that he had actively worked on the title for the past year, so take the release date with a grain of salt."

-edit-
Here they think he was talking about Mario 128
http://www.sm128c.com/previews.php?sys=gcn&game=sm128&num=01
(And they are talking about the June and November edition of 1998 The Dead Cat.)

Quote:
"It was left on my desk in the middle of development. It's a matter of priorities. Once we get down to working on the game, I think it will be finished fairly quickly. We already prepared the sequel like Yoshi's Story. But we are emphasizing our effort toward an unaccountable game or a game that we have to build from ground zero. "
- Shigeru Miyamoto when asked about Mario 64 II, June 1998
