I was poking around the NeoGeo.com Forums and found a thread on this device.

Supposedly, it was supposed to play both CD and AES Cartridge based games. It was eventually ditched in favor of the now defunct NeoCD system. Sadly, it only materialized in pre-production art form as illustrated here:

Any one else have anything to contribute(Possibly info on a proto that may not have been documented?)?

- edit -

I also for got to mention that it was supposed to use IR based controllers as depicted. Also, the stick depicted looks a whole lot like the "Advanced" stick.

Never liked the Neo Geo CD system in the first place. This would have been better.

Better? The NeoGeo CD had the SAME EXACT games as the AES carts plus or minus a few. I think you're missing the point and you don't understand why this thing was canned in the first place.

Fffmmurgle... The NeoGeo CD brought great games with the same quality (minus loadtime) to lower middle-class kids across the US. Saying that you don't like the NeoGeo CD is basically saying that SNK games suck.

The only purpose of the NeoGeo CD was to bring the same games to the public, only cheaper.

Damn dude... What DO you like?

to be honest... at the time, it did make sense. But now, with MVS games as cheap as they are and as easy as it is to build a consolized MVS system, the CD is obsolete and the loading times BLOW.

Wow, that's quite possibly the most ludicrous concept art I have ever seen. It looks like an early 80's stereo system!

I wanna know who thought that mini joystick was a good idea.

And IR? You know, Nintendo was going to make the NES' controllers IR and they decided to go with wired for a very good reason: IR controllers didn't work worth shit.

I see people realy did like this system. It always disturbed me at the time that somebody created an entire console dedicated to just Neo Geo games.

Do you think it needed 3 AC adaptors to play it too?

Come on... The NES Advantage was great for... um... Pac-Man.

"somebody"= SNK
SNK = Creator of NeoGeo
NeoStar = Console that plays NeoGeo games.

Another example:

Sega = Creator of Sega Genesis and Sega CD
Sega Genesis/Sega CD = Console that plays Sega Genesis and Sega CD games

Yet another example:

Sony = Creator of Playstation games.
PS2 = Console that plays PSX and PS2 games.

And:

Nintendo Revolution

What's so disturbing?

No, I have no qualms about joysticks, but that joystick is REALLY small.

I always thought at the time, that it would have been better to convert the Neo Geo games for the Playstation, Saturn, or Nintendo 64. Now I can appreciate how a dedicated Neo Geo console can faithfully play all Neo Geo system games. However the load times really turned me off of ever buying a Neo Geo CD. Today the load times just like worse than ever.

When you think about something, you have to think about the time associated with the something. New Historicism.

That's like comparing a 24.4 modem to a 56k modem and saying the 56k modem's load times suck.

Load time depends on the amount of RAM and the speed of the drive in the console. Look up the specs for yourself and compare it to an X-box.

NEO came out in early 90's. Waaay before PS or Saturn came out... Ports were the suck. Ugh. Dont' remind me of the godawful Art of Fighting port...

btw, the Advantage was wired.

Also, the Neo Advanced stick is a little more reliable than the original AES stick. So I'm kinda thankful for that. ONce you get used to it, the advanced stick isn't THAT bad...

I used to think that it would have better to port games like Art of Fighting to the Playstation, Saturn, and Nintendo 64 instead of having a Neo Geo only console with horrible load times. Now I know better. Playstation and the Nintendo 64 sucked.
