(holy shit I can log in again!)
The other day, I was doing a bit of research on GBA games, and among several interesting finds (such as Battland and Sadistic Boxing), I saw this:
http://gameboy.ign.com/articles/100/100188p1.html
So, Raylight Studios was making a Wing Commander-style game called "Star Giants". No game called Star Giants, but Raylight did make something along those lines.....the GBA port of Wing Commander: Prophecy. And indeed, a quick search of the internet proves the veracity of this factoid (most notably, this interview and this forum post).
So I was just wondering...do you guys know of any other cases like this, where a game/demo originally didn't involve a license, but had one worked in later?
The only other one I know of is Pirates of the Caribbean, which was originally Sea Dogs 2... |

Don't know if I'd call that a license, since Nintendo was the creater of both.
Uh, Ninja Hanamaru or whatever game got transformed into Yo Noid!
Yeah, I remember the other game I thinking of... SUPAAAA PUYO PUYO to Kirby's Avalance/Ghost Trap.
Though there's probably worse changes I can't think of at the moment. |

Yo Noid! was originally Masked Ninja Hanamaru (Kamen no Ninja Hanamaru). This made a lot of sense because even back then I always thought to myself "why the hell would Capcom make a game based on the Noid?"
It made a lot less sense than cancelling California Raisins. |

Not quite what you're looking for, but the first TMNT arcade game had Pizza Hut logos added when it was ported to the NES.
Also, if I recall correctly, the European version of Biker Mice From Mars was blatantly pro-Snickers. |

Sunsoft's "Terminator" license game turned into "RAF World/Journey to Silius".
Sunsoft's "Meta fight" got brushed up for English launch as "Blaster Master".
HAL's "Special Tee Shot" became first "Kirby's Tee Shot" and then before release "Kirby's Dream Course" and later a "Special Tee Shot" version was released on the BS-X.
"Mario Kart 64" was originaly "Super Mario Kart R" and had different chars.
Rare's GBA title "Diddy Kong Pilot" became "Banjo Pilot" after Rare was sold to MS. |

Crazyland/Doki Doki Yuuenchi -> Trolls in Crazyland
And the opposite case:
Mickey Mouse III: Dream Balloon -> Kid Klown in Night Mayor World
...Which is kinda funny, since that unfranchised version was the first appearance of Kemco's current mascot (even though his design had nothing to do with Tong King Show's).
I wonder if they had made the Kid Klown version first in case they couldn't get a franchise for it (which might be what they did with their Bugs Bunny/Mickey/Hugo/Woody Woodpecker Crazy Castle games, or even what Sunsoft did with Sunman). |

This might be slightly off topic, but I recall hearing that Miyamoto originally wanted to make a Popeye game, but he couldn't get the rights so he made Donkey Kong instead. |

Huh. I was kind of doubtful of the authenticity, since I couldn't remember if I read an interview where he said that or if I dreamt that I read an interview where he said it. My dreams are boring like that.
BUT, when you really think about it, Donkey Kong WOULD have made an awesome Popeye game. You can't deny that. |

I know G4 stated the Popeye/Donkey Kong thing on one of their silly specials about Miyamoto, but yeah, it's G4 and I'm not even sure why I had the TV tuned in to it at the time.
Also it's been a while since I read it, but I think Game Over might have mentioned something about Nintendo trying to aquire the rights for Popeye before they started working on Donkey Kong, which did fall through the first go around but later manage to gain the rights and made the Popeye game we know and kinda ignore today. I'm pretty sure that GO never specifically stated that Donkey Kong itself was originally planned by Miyamoto to be a Popeye game.
Or is GO wrong on this as well?
I should really read more books... |

Yeah, but it's not as good a Popeye game as Popeye, which was designed and released by Miyamoto. |

Did he design the arcade Popeye as well as the NES Popeye? |

Ah-hah, THAT must be where I got it. Ugh, I almost subconsciously believed G4 about something...
I must remember not to trust my own memory anymore.
And just out of curiosity, how do we know for sure that it's untrue? |

They're pretty much the same game, I don't know if he directed the port or whatever. |
