Someone just told me Treasure Box for the PS2 (that japan-only sega ages release) has some very interesting binaries:

- A Gunstar Heroes prototype (Genesis, quite possibly different to the Gunstar Heroes Sample beta in the fullset)

- Dynamite Heddy SMS and GG!!!! (undumped, so far as I know)

- There was an Alien Soldier proto I heard word of a few years ago. Now, that doesn't seem to be on the disc... but there's a slim chance.

What would a man need to extract binaries from a PS2 disc or disc image?

Dynamite Heddy has been dumped and released. The GG version was apparently in a January 2006 update of SMS Power, and a Brazilian SMS version sometime around March 2005.

Judging from the SMS Power page on the SMS Dynamite Headdy, it was probably released outside Brazil, since it was developed inside Sega rather than by Tec Toy. As well, SMS Power released the North American/European GG version of the game, not the Japanese version; I'm not sure if those versions have been dumped or not.

Oh awesome - I've been looking to play this one for a while now.

Still want to get my hands on that Gunstar proto, though.

I've also heard this collection has Dynamite Headdy (Genesis) with all the text in AND translated into English. Is this true? Please let it be true.

It has Dynamite Headdy, Alien Soldier and Gunstar Heroes, and all of them is allowed for being played in Japanese and "Overseas" (Yes, English) with sprite-limit off, anti-flicker, smoothing and 480p :D

I haven't taken a look at the disc at all, but hey, if it's just an emulator, hey maybe it can play other stuff too with those awesome features.

That would be nice, but things like the Sonic 1 title screen would look like awesome crap without the sprite limit feature. =(

actually awhile back online someone had pics from a magazine of it. Orignally you played like a more human soldier in armor, and the bosses and stages looked slightly different. From what I heard also the game almost got canned completely, which may have resulted in
the version we

have now. As for it being emulated, its a bit iffy to say the least. When playing it i noticed that if you switch between versions its alwasy at the last part you played that version as if it automaticly froze right there when switching. Plus theres almost no signs of loading times.

On the disc, there's file called DATA.CCF, it contains all the roms + all the artwork/manua scans.

The file is 110mb in total, it lists file names and locations (I think) at certain points in the file, like this:

DATA.CFF wrote:
alien_soldier.shr........0...i..alien_soldier_eu.shr.........k..credits.ccf

Searching for the first Alien soldier, I find

Quote:
SHR*Random garbage*SEGA M...DRIVE (C@)..1995.F.EBALIEN .SOLDIER

Then there's about 1,4mb that seems to belong to the game (or atleast 1,4mb, which ends with a long empty piece before it goes onto the next version of Alien Soldier. (as seen in the file list, it starts with one, then goes to another tagged EU)

Now, I don't have any genesis roms in hand, except from a PAL Gunstar Heroes (which did not match at all the Gunstar Heroes data I found) and a Sparkster, but atleast, one thing worth pointing out from sparkster is:

Quote:
SEGA GENESIS (C)T-95 1994.SEPSPARKSTER SPARKSTER GM T-95166-00

It seems rather similiar to the start of the Alien Soldier, just a bit different layout, but the same basic info at the start there, so I guess this thing is using regular roms, but the sizes seems odd (as the first Gunstar Heroes data is about 768kb, instead of 1mb and such)

So maybe some sort of compression or changes have been made to the games for this compilation... I dunno.
(Loading the pieces I've tried stripping out gives me an epileptic seizure)

I haven't tried taking out the GG games and loading those or tried loading what atleast seems to be Genesis roms on my backup unit (as that requires me to drag out my backup unit)

Guess the most important things are:

What is .SHR supposed to be?
And what kind of archiving file format is CCF ?
I'm totaly crap at these things in general, but well, those are the formats that seems to be there, + .IMA which could be short for any type of image format :/

[edit]
Yes, there's a "Lunatic Gunstar" there too, so untill someone finds a way to strip out these things properly, Gunstar Heroes Treasure Box will be the only way to play with them.

I think that's ICE's way of asking if the human soldier in armor looks like Red and Blue from GSH.

I've heard that about the original version having a different character too... I think there are pics somewhere. It seems like it's the same/similar graphic with a different head, but it's been awhile.

the site i saw it on was dedicated to alien soldier i belive. I remember i found it when looking for pics of alien soldier. It really caught my eye quickly. Well the armor was similar to the european version of contro (probotector) and the head was a human head. Most of the game looked like an early version of the final, meaning some details here and and there were missing. The pics the site showed were from an old magazine and i think the game was called something else at that point. I'll try to see if i can stumble oni t again.

That "M...DRIVE" part suggests to me that the ROMs are very sparsely compressed, which would also explain Gustar Heroes' reduced size. It was probably implemented purely as a means of copy protection, since there's really no reason to compress a 1MB ROM image on a 4GB+ disc.

Could this also be the result of some kind of copy protection built into the disc itself confusing the PC, much like PSX discs? I don't know anything about PS2 copy protection...

I thought M....DRIVE suggested "Mega Drive", as in that Alien Soldier ROM was either European (For the English?) or Japanese. (See how the US sparkster I used for comparing has GENESIS mentioned in the area that looks very much the same)

And all the data I "think" belongs to Alien Soldier (atleast all data from the first SHR mark 'til the 2nd Alien Soldier rom starts) is 1,4mb

And the compilation is using a CD and is about 120mb in total, not a DVD. (So the disc is a blue/purple-ish if you flip it upside down)

Also, someone was kind enough to point out to me how to unlock the other stuff on the disc.

If I kept Holding RIGHT on the version selection menu for Gunstar, I first got the prototype unlocked then the GG version.
And on Dynamite Headdy, I first got GG then MegaDrive.
Only thing I need to complete a game for is Japanese Gunstar Heroes for the Lunatic Heroes concept artwork.

And wow, Master System + GG has a CPU setting, that allows for the CPU to boosted (probably to avoid slowdown), and the GG also allows for ZOOM while playing.

Eh... What Belmont said.

The first time I saw Red's redesign, I thought it kinda looked like a human version of the Alien Soldier. I was wondering it that pic would ring a bell to anybody who has seen those supposed AS proto pics.

The SHR files are all encrypted ROMS. You can extract them for yourself with pcsx2 however. Convert the bin/cue of the game to a 2048 mode ISO, open the iso in a hexeditor and go to the address 134820. The file listing starts there. You will see the files inside in alphabetical order, so gunstar heroes is after the 2342879 gallery files, in case you cant find them (or just search for the romnames i just listed). The 3 roms loaded from the main menu in the game are alien_soldier.shr, dynamite_headdy.shr and gunstar_heroes.shr.

You can change the loaded rom by editing the location that a filename points to in the ISO (just changing a filename does not work as the file sizes vary, you have to change the data linked to a filename). Every file name is two lines in hex, it starts with the file name and the last 7 bytes of hex are the address/size of the file. Exchange that last 7 bytes and the game will load a different ROM for the given filename.

So, for example, to load alien_soldier_eu.shr instead of alien_soldier.shr, exchange the 7 bytes starting at 134839 (it should be 30 00 00 9c 69 15 00 in hex) to the 7 bytes that starts at 134859 (a0 15 00 84 6b 15 00). That will make the filename alien_soldier.shr point to the data of alien_soldier_eu.shr.

After that load your hax hexed ISO into pcsx2, select one from the 3 games inside the main menu (Guntard Heroes, Dynomutt Headdy and Alien Sonofabitch in order in case you cant read kana and the background doesnt give it away) and watch pcsx2 hang. You will see that it hangs because the fps counter jumps from nowhere near 60 fps to 60 fps or way above. The catch is that while it hangs, it goes as far as loading the decrypted roms into the playstations memory, giving you a chance to extract them.
Press ESC to return to the main menu of pcsx2, go to debug -> memory dump, click RAW DUMP, enter the start address of 0 and the End Address of FFFFFF, and hit OK. It should create a 16 mb dump.raw file in the pcsx2 folder.

Open that dump.raw in a hexeditor and search for your megadrive rom in it. It should be at 597A00 but in case you can't find it or its at a different location (it may happen) just search for GUNSTAR or DYNAMITE or ALIEN (case sensitive) or whatever to jump close to the rom header. Check where the ROM starts, and copy out 1mb (gunstar) or 2mb (alien, dynamite) of data to a blank file and name it whatever you want .bin, load it in goodgen and see how it magically recognizes all the files you extracted because non of them are unknown undumped super secret ROMZ with translations and level select menus.

(note: I have no clue on how a gamegear or master system rom is supposed to look like so I havent touched those, nor do I care about them because I hate the Megadrive versions of these games enough already. Anyone feeling adventurous enough may want to extract those the same way, though it may not work as the game may try to load these MASTER SYSTEM and GAME GEAR roms into a Megadrive emulator, causing a glitch that will stop it from processing the decryption of the roms to start with.)

phpbb really needs a setting or a theme or something that means I don't have to do it so one table-breaking (or whatever) post doesn't kill the rest.

Dur fixed!

(Didn't notice it messed up, as I'm using a horribly low-res laptop at the moment, so things looks messed up no matter what to me)

And heh, clever, using PCSX2 to decrypt.
