Yeah, because I can't think of twelve thousand other games with plot twists as stupid as that. Come on. :P

Seriously, these are NES games. After a certain point the plot of a game or movie stops being a spoiler and is just the plot. Guess what, in fight club, the narrator and tyler are the SAME GUY. and in Casablanca, she doesn't stay with Bogie! OH! and in mario, when you finally get to the 8th castle... THAT'S WHERE THE PRINCESS IS!

Yeah, but Kockamamie and CaTaffy are only mentioned in the manual and not in the game, so it's clearly was not part of the game designer's intentions and thus, not part of the in-game storyline.

Huh, interesting. Vermon CaTaffy was the name given to Big Boss in the Worlds of Power book for the original Metal Gear.

Edit: Never mind. Both Worlds of Power and Snake's Revenge got the name from the Metal Gear manual. I thought that Snake's Revenge was borrowing from Worlds of Power.

I never had the chance to read the WOP, but from what I see, it seems to be based on the manual's "interpretation" of the plot. At this point though, I much rather spent my money on an "actual" Metal Gear novels like Crossfire or Blackcollar (both which were actual basis for MG2SS).

I remember absolutely loving that Worlds of Power book as a kid. I haven't read it since the second grade, though, so that isn't a positive testimony.

The only Worlds of Power book I ever had (and still have) was the Blaster Master one. Curiously, it seems that Blaster Master: Blasting Again accepts the WoP novel as canon and builds its plot upon that.

I never understood that. Especially considering the Japanese version of Blaster Master (Metafight) had an entirely different and more coherent plot.

My memory is a little rusty, but weren't the worlds of power books the ones that had game codes in it? I remember I read a novel like that for Metal Gear god knows how long ago and it was a pretty good read.

Don't think I've heard of either of those. Details?

And yep, the Worlds of Power books were the ones with the codes and stuff in them. Sharkey has the full text of the Castlevania book at his place. Not the best of the series from what I remember, but I still ate it up when I was a kid.

JC Pollock's Crossfire was novel about a man who goes into Czech to find a former Czech skater with a secret formula. Blackcollar was another novel by Timothy Zahn (best known for his Star Wars novels) about Outer Space ninjas.

Metal Gear 2 had a Czech skater as a main character and a boss named "Black Color" (who happens to be a ninja).

I've always liked Snake's Revenge. The side-scrolling areas did seem a bit out of place, but otherwise a solid game. The whole disavowal of its existence thing is almost as silly as IGA with Castlevania. "Nope, Castlevania 64, CotM, and Legends never happened." Uh-huh, sure.

Oh, and I had the Castlevania and Infiltrator Worlds of Power books, but I don't remember much about them...

Well, the difference between Kojima retconning Snake's Revenge and IGA retconning Castlevania 64 and Legends is that at least Kojima created the original Metal Gear (not to mention he retconned the game under the developer's original request), whereas IGA didn't make Castlevania and is just forcing his vision on his ideal Castlevania universe by retconning the post-SotN games not done by him. To IGA's credit though, at least he removed that bit about Alucard being Trevor's father.

As for the Simon's Quest WoP, it's best that you don't remember it at all.

I just realized I never thanked you for pointing those books out for me, JU. Sorry about that.

I thought that I'd get the chance to check one of them out over Christmas break, but that didn't happen. Hopefully I'll have a free weekend soon so I can grab one of them.

Hey, no problem!

I read Crossfire myself and I just ordered the two Blackcollar books.

Crossfire is a really good book, if only a bit dated (it was written during the Cold War after all). While Solid Snake is not an exact ripoff, it borrows from Crossfire in the same way Snatcher borrowed from Blade Runner and Policenauts borrowed from Lethal Weapon. The relationship between Hana Cernicova and Adrian Dulaney (from Crossfire) is almost parallel to Grey Fox and Natasha Marcova's relation in MG2.

The "Operation Orders Sheet" in the MG2 manual is almost an exact word-to-word ripoff of the operation orders received by the main character in Chapter 5 of Crossfire.

Both stories even feature Czech scientists are vulnerable to heart attacks (so to speak).

Yes, that's true. I just don't like anyone retroactively saying a game never took place, it irks me. If they want to say it happened in an "alternate universe" or the like, fine with me, but the fact is, the game was created, published, played by thousands of people, and I experienced it myself even, so it absolutely did happen and I won't pretend that it didn't.

Simon's Quest, LAUGHING OUT LOUD... yeah, probably so!
