Yes, a very funny, but convincing, hoax. A long time ago, that guy sent me a GIF of the "Proto Topman Level" that he was working on, based off the pics I put on my website. It looked really good, just like the pic from the magazine. I didn't realize until a bit later that he was using it for an April Fool's joke.
p.s. It would have been more convincing if he had gotten the ground/rings palette right on Gemini Man's stage. |

I don't think it's that convincing, personally. The big thing for me is that the screens on the page don't exhibit any NES PPU artifacts, but rather look like RGB screenshots. While that's not 100% proof (as there are RGB mods for the NES which entail removing a PPU from an RGB-capable system such as the Famicom Titler or a few of the VS games), it's most likely that any random NES proto found in the wild would have it's screenshots taken from a bog-standard stock NES. |

I know there's at least one real prototype of Rockman 2 that's been found, I saw it on Yahoo Japan auctions. According to the description, it had debugging features that could be accessed by entering a certain code on the controller. It didn't say what those features were, though. |
