Well, it's not so much as that I dislike the appearance of the US model, it's just that all the other models looked better. Why couldn't we just have the same exact thing as the SFC but with a SNES sticker. I mean, I liked the logo better, and the 4-colored buttons rather than the 2 tones of purple we got. They had a better design, why redesign it for an American release? It wasn't too Japanese looking or anything.

THIS IS NOT BETTER...

But I do see your point, I'm really fond of the Super Famicom design myself. I kind of wish I had an SFC.

I did not mean that design at all. I meant the design of the SFC as the one they "already had".

That picture looks like it was drawn by the same guy who did the artwork for Cheetahmen II

You're forgetting that the unreleased material came from collectors. If it wasn't for nutjobs like us, these things would be lost forever.

yeah, it is kinda funny (and neat) when it's the fans/collectors gets to contribute to official releases somehow.

Often happens with DVD releases of old stuff too, directors/publishers/project-responsible starts reaching out to the fangroups to find various stuff that's lost.

Chris, can we pool together and send you money for a scanner? How much do you need?

A scanner's not that expensive, if there's a shortage on people willing to contribute to such a great cause, I'd like to add that I'll gladly chip in a little too to enable Chris to get a scanner and do some nice scans (though, ofcourse, if he wants to. Scanning magazines sure is booooriiing and time consuming  )

It definitely is boring and time-consuming. That's why I never felt like buying a scanner. Anyway, my friend in the same city is moving back to the States, so he's giving me his scanner for free. :)

I hope it works...

P.S. I updated my page a little while ago with a timeline of the SFC's life in the press. The damn thing was already in development in the middle of 1987!!!

I didn't forget, though I probably should've elaborated it better. I just wished that what happened with the Activision Anthology could've happened with other companies, cooperating with collectors/fans to possibly revive some old lost material for historical purposes. Similar to uncovering old material for shows and movies on DVDs as Carnivol mentioned.

Of course I realize that it isn't too profitable for companies to invest time in locating stuff they had a hand in making years ago. Not to mention legal issues that might pop up concerning rights.

Nintendo has this weird policy of trying to buy museum items back from collectors. From what i've heard, they actually keep a museum at their HQ and have gone well above market price to buy some of the items therein from collectors. Kinda seems like a cool idea.

And if it wern't for people like us, a lot of this stuff would be lost. My company has ISO guidelines to destroy any code from a game after a certain number of years. Same thing with the builds themselves.

The only reason i have the collection i do is because people give me items they would otherwise throw away. How many people can say they've pulled a Dreamcast VMU mp3 player out of the garbage?

Prototype hardware gets treated like garbage by most people in this industry. Once they're done with it, it gets thrown away. That's why i like places like lost levels.

Wasn't it for regional lockout purposes? I've heard conflicting stories about the NA SNES.
Some say there's no electronic J/U lockout, only NTSC/PAL.

The only lockout between the SFC and the US SNES is those little tabs in the cartridge slot. That wouldn't have required redesigning the entire chassis, but I'm not complaining that they did. It's not like the SFC was a looker.

And on the other topic - every other design looked better than the original US SNES.

Definately looks like that of a giant mushroom, sir!

Looks like a non-descript plastic blob to me! Actually, it vaguely resembles my CD wallet.

It actually looks like a multi-purpose kitchen device.

Like you can attach a blender or something, you just slot on the devices ontop of it and you're ready to go!

The Euro/JP version is the luxury model, while the US is the cheap pirate design rip-off version.

Some more scans of the SFC's first press conference:

http://www.disgruntleddesigner.com/chrisc/secret/SFC_1988Q4.html#sfcbon

I found out said conference took place on November 21, 1988, two years to the day of the SFC's eventual release in 1990. The SFC was, like, totally finished even at this point and Nintendo sat on it for two years. (Kinda like Atari, but nobody wanted the 7800, anyway.)

Cool stuff.

And, oh, that reminds me:
I know I've shown this before to someone, but I found on an old GameTV (1990-ish) tape a SFC presentation of some sort (not entirely sure what's going on in the video, though)

I'll evt. get around to uploading the full video. Just need to... get unlazy and find some time.

Like a drawing based on vague descriptions from a witness...
"I'm telling you, Officer, It was gray-ish, had a hatch on the front, elevating design and some sort of vents on the back... Oh! And it was dry-humping a GBPlayer!"

Yeah, and it had a redundant name on the side!
