I guess it refers to Gaiden (I've sure as hell not seen any RE1 GBC out there, and I'm pretty much ontop of most Capcom/RE stuff), + the first part is probably incorrect too, about HotGen feeling it was of poor quality, 'cause to quote Fergus McGovern of HotGen:

(This from back in late 2004, when I tried asking a few questions about the RE GBC project) |

I seem to remember hearing that this game was canceled not due to quality issues, but because royalties. I don't remember the specifics, but i think capcom didn't want to pay the developers enough, so they had another developer produce Gaiden.
From what i've heard, the game looks pretty good but plays sluggish. I'm pretty sure it's out there in a collector's hands (otherwise known as a vault of butter). |

I heard that while as it was shaping up well it was decided that a handheld couldn't do the theme justice (it couldn't be scary), and would have thus cheapened the brand. |

Yeah because Resident Evil Gaiden sure didn't cheapen anything... |

I remember everyone making a big deal out of Alone in the Dark for using some nifty raster effect to produce more colors than the GBC was supposed to be capable of. Never got around to checking it out and then of course the GBA came out so there was no point in gettin' all fancy like that. |

I have it its actually pretty fun the graphics are so amazing for a gbc game. From what Ive heard this is the same company that came out with Driver 3 for gameboy advance which is also very impressive. My friend beat it and said it was easy. I never got arround to beating it because I suck. |

I just found an old Game Pro special edition thingy that's devoted to 'upcomming handheld games', has 3 shots from the canceled Resident Evil. I don't own a camera or a scanner, but if anyone's interested i can borrow one. (yeah, i know... i have $30,000 in dev equiptment and no camera).
The mag is actually full screens for games that never made it, at least a dozen Game.com games (including metal gear solid), and a few Neo Geo pocket (like american version of that card battle game everyone loves that never made it over here).
LMK and i'll steal a scanner... |

If you had access to a scanner, would be nice to have the whole issue in PDF format. |
