Pretty cool page showing differences between the Japanese and US versions of "Wrath of the Black Manta".
I think in addition to these changes, the game should have been named
"Wrath of the Mother Fucking Black Manta"
or perhaps
"Mother Fucking Wrath of the Mother Fucking Black Manta"
or how about
"It's Black Manta Time, Mother Fucker"

I could never really explain why I liked Wrath of the Black Manta, but I guess I must have had some subconscious understanding that I was playing something that was better than what the Nips got (for once).

I think the only reason I wanted to play this game when it came out was because Nintendo Power did a big spread on it. I beat it within a few days, iirc, but it took me quite a while to get past the first boss, which was by far the hardest one, although the last boss took me a little while to figure out the weapon order. So basically more than half the time it took me to beat it was spent on trying to kill the first boss and the last boss...the rest was easy! I remember when I called the Nintendo tip line to get help on that part, they wouldn't tell, me, since they had a habit (or policy) back then of not telling you how to beat final bosses, though they did tell me how to do the last step in Shadowgate, but I digress.

When I went to the NWC 1990, they had a question and answer session with the GPCs (sort of a "stump the pros" thing). At this point I had already known for months how to beat the last boss, but I asked them anyway and they told me (and the crowd)! Those cheating bastards were put on the spot and spilled the beans, BWA HA HA!.

When I was 13 or so and the Genesis came out, I really wanted it and some kid traded it to me for $70 and two NES games (River City Ransom and something else). I was happy as shit playing Altered Beast and Last Battle. For two days, anyway....the kid and his mother came marching up my driveway with her slapping him in the head the whole way up to the door. Apparently he had stolen the Genesis from his brother! She gave me back my $70 and two games, but my River City Ransom was apparently sold, so they offered me Wrath of the Black Manta instead, and I agreed, having wanted to play it anyway, and having already beaten RCR many times and found every item. Not the best trade, for sure, but it is worth the memory to have done it!!

I saw the kid (now about 30 years old) a month ago and we were reminiscing (sp?) about that! We laughed our asses off...a good time indeed.

Thus endeth the sermon, er, rant, or something.

Stolen goods@ LostLevels.org!
Oh my!

I stole my Genesis in late 1989 from KayBee. I was pretty good at that back in the day. I was also too short to reach the upper shelf, so my buddy grabbed it for me. Next day, same store, stole one for him after we beat the shit out of Altered Beast.
And a few days later got one for another buddy. Then the first buddy, the tall one, figured out that the carts on display at the Macy's electronics section could be pulled out, and the Genesis' RAM would keep the game running long after we grabbed Tennis, Soccer, Space Harrier, Tommy Lasorda Baseball, etc.

The brother of a friend of mine used to steal random crap from the local used game store here all the time. He wasn't really stealing to grab games he wanted, either, or even stealing games for any systems he owns sometimes. He was just stealing crap for the sake of stealing crap.

Well, thats pretty easy to explain. It had Ninjas, and for the time, those giant detailed sprites were as close as you could get to having a arcade game at home.

Word, Red. Let's all come up with a plan to steal SimCity NES and a few other things from NOA.

Back on topic, Kid Fenris posted this link a while back. I dunno if anyone else noticed, but about halfway down the page, the guy claims to have worked on a canceled sequel to Wrath of the Black Manta. Someone should email the guy about that.

Interesting, Skyrbe. Maybe I'll try and reach the person you are referring to. Alas, the page hasn't been updated since Bill Clinton was sending Madeline Albright to North Korea.
As for you two miscreants, Redeye, & Merrick Budrick, for NES version of Sim City, I would consider resumeing my fabled five finger career. D. Derby 2 for Saturn? Ehhhh....maybe. I do like Destruction Derby, i must admit.

I'm the only one allowed to stalk Shouichi Yoshikawa. Fuck you, Insert Credit!

Seriously, if you manage to get in touch with him, let me know. I tried every address on his website (even the one on his cat page, the only part of the site that's been updated recently) when I was hunting down details about Wurm, and all of my e-mails bounced back to me.

Yeah...a lot of my work day consists of "hey Brandon, check this out, isn't this cool?" followed by an Insert Credit post.

Red, dunno if Brandon is your boss, or perhaps he is your "special" friend down the hall, but whoever he is, if he sees this WOTBM website, he will be your bestest friend for ever and ever, take my word on it.

Brandon Sheffield, who runs InsertCredit is a contributor to GameSetWatch, the same site to which TheRedEye is a contributor. So, if anything, they are co-workers...

Brandon is the features editor of Game Developer, I'm the features editor of Gamasutra. So he's the print version of me, and I'm the web version of him!

I hate to bump this VERY old thread, but I am currently talking to Shouichi Yoshikawa via e-mail. If anybody has any questions or comments for him (Kid Fenris), now might be the time to make suggestions.
