As most Famicom fans may or may not know, a Famicom version of Strider was planned for Japanese release, but only the NES counterpart actually made it out. Well here's a neat little treat: the Japanese flyer for the game

I, um...huh. I always thought that one came out. Anyway, that page isn't loading for me. Could be my ISP's DNS server though, it seems to be acting up.

It was released here (and Europe, I think), but not in Japan. Here's the image directly from the page.

EDIT: Linked for size.

Would be neat to see the Famicom version if a proto is ever found, though I dunno if anything would've been drastically different.

Thanks for showing that pic.

The second shot shows one difference. In the American version of Strider, a character's portrait appears on the middle computer monitor in the bottom row of terminals, while the dialogue shows up in the large display at the top of the screen. The text and the character's picture apparently switch places in the Japanese edition.

Anyone care to speculate as to why this never came out in Japan?

Good eye, you're right. There's a bit of a misconception that even I catch myself in, though: a game can be co-developed in Japan and the U.S.A. simultaneously. It's very possible that an early "American" version had this same portrait position. This isn't necessarily a "difference in the Japanese version," it could just be a difference between an early and final build.

As far as speculation, well, that's all it can ever be. This isn't something that Lost Levels is currently able to actually research, as we've yet to "employ" any native Japanese folks.

Capcom was kind of weird back then...several early Japanese games (Makai Island, Sweet Home) didn't make it to America despite plans to the contrary, several early American games (Strider, Legendary Wings) didn't make it to Japan for, as far as we can see, no reason at all, and an even higher amount (The Speed Rumbler, Black Tiger...I'm sure there are others, anyone?) didn't make it out ANYWHERE. Capcom circa 1987-1991 or so is one of the most predominant mysteries in my research. It may well merit its own Elusions article in the future.

Side Arms comes to mind, and Raisins, of course.

Thanks for posting that scan, JU. That's definitely going up at my place.

There's also Lord of Lightning. I've always been curious about that one.

No problem. BTW, I got a flyer scan of Arc Hound (the Famicom version of Contra Force) in my old computer. As soon as I recover it, I'll sent it to you.

I hate thread necromancing, but I figured I'd mention this.

But there's a Capcom Collection Mini Mix heading for the GBA now, with the NES/Famicom versions of "Strider, Bionic Commando and Mighty Final Fight"

Link, please? Is this a Japanese or US release?
That would be cool if the FC version of Strider finally got released, but I bet it'd be identical to the US one with Japanese text. Not like the slightly weird pics of the sample version we've seen floating around.

The Strider thing is damn curious.

That's pretty damn stingy of them, anyway. No "All-Stars"-ified versions??? No Duck Tales, SF2010, Little Nemo? Capcom could fit ALL of their hit NES games onto a GBA cartridge.

Capcom doesn't have a Disney license anymore, do they?

No, and they probably don't have Little Nemo either. Street Fighter, I imagine they think the franchise would be tainted or something, or maybe they're saving it for some super duper street fighter collection. Shitty as it is, they could have at least thrown on Ghosts 'N Goblins.

So is Capcom releasing this in Japan then? The movie that plays is the US version presumably since the Bionic Commando title is used.

I can't say I'm interested in this. I already have all 3 games on there, and nothing significant seems to be added. Only if a Japanese release does happen, that contains the Japanese Bionic Commando and unreleased Famicom Strider would I check it out.
