Ive been put off repairing my ps2 using an online guide because at least one such guide used the magic words "the playstation 2 has a class 1 laser that can blind you".

Is this actually true? I managed to fix my dreamcast without too much hassle but to repair my ps2 id actually need to unscrew bits of the laser to repair a part. Is this as dangerous as it sounds?

You probably shouldn't have the laser exposed while the thing is powered up. Keep it unplugged (which you should be doing anyway) and you'll be fine.

ok thanks, but ive more or less decided that Im really not going to risk it anyway. I have a major phobias about anything happening to my eyes anyway. Ill just maybe give away the broken one to someone with enough lack of fear to fix and save up for a new one i guess.

There is absolutely no way the laser can harm your eyes while the unit is unplugged, since nothing comes out of it. Even when it is plugged in AND turned on, you have to stare directly into the laser for a few moments (maybe longer) to any damage.

In short: you'd have to be a complete idiot.
