What is the best choice for dumping SNES protos and 'Nintendo Power' carts with? I have a Game Doctor SF7 and every time I try to dump the proto sprite garbage appears and it's different each time. When I go to dump the NP carts, one dumps the 'MENU PROGRAM' again and again and the other goes to a black screen with sprite garbage time to time. The one that doesn't dump the menu goes straight to game when booted, the other goes to the menu first.
I've been trying to dump using the floppy disk. What software should I be using to dump? I cannot get TSF3 to dump anything or send anything. I can get uCON64 to send ROMs to the unit. Any ideas?

Quote:
In the late 90s, Nintendo created an innovative way to buy Super Famicom games. They started a service called Nintendo Power, which ran in popular convenience stores in Japan. For a certain amount of money, you could buy a blank cartridge, and you could put several games available to the service on the cart. There were many popular games on the service, and even some games that were exclusive to it. This service was continued until 2000.

The Nintendo Power cartridges were the ones which could handle hi and lo-roms on the same cartridge, right? If so, I wonder if the main problem is that your cartridge has the different types within it and the dumper can't handle it. I would imagine it's either that or the storage system which those cartridges use to store the roms. The Wikipedia entry on the cartridge also says that they're solid-state which makes dumping them a difficult matter. I'd say that the first or third issue is probably what's causing the problem.

As for what to use for dumping, I'm honestly not sure. I've actually never heard of anyone trying to dump the NP cartridges before now.

There's a category for them in GoodSNES, so somebody's done it.

Weren't there several games only released as NP downloads?

(I can immediately think of Japanese Super Punch-Out!! and Super Famicom Wars)

Although who knows who dumped them and how.

The games in question I want to dump are:

I've played these all side-by-side with their counterpart dumped ROM:
Onita Atsushi FMW (J) (Beta) has at least 1 different portrait in the intro where is shows the fighters than the ROM I played (Onita Atsushi FMW (J)) but I didn't play through it for all the differences.
Super Fire Pro Wrestling X Premium (J) (NP) has a different highlighted menu (maybe) and also offers to load a saved game where the ROM I played (Super Fire Pro Wrestling X Premium (J)) didn't.
Fire Emblem - Monshou no Nazo (J) (NP) seems to start the first battle somewhere completely different that the ROMs I tried (v1.0 and v1.1) and my cart, but then again it's really hard to read Japanese when I don't understand it.

What were they, battery backed? I never knew there were exclusives! Sweet. How many of the exclusives have been dumped before?

I stand corrected, then. Once I saw that and the list further down about the list of NP exclusives, I went ahead and did a quick search to see what could possible handle the cartridges. I only got one seemingly good result in a PDF here. It doesn't explicitly mention that it can dump NP cartridges per se, but there is a snippet of information in it that says it can at least run their roms. Take it for what's it worth, but I thought either eludevisibility or anyone else might be curious.

Do you happen to know what's different about the NP version of Densetsu no Ogre Battle?

No sir, I don't have all my ROMs together either or I could look at them side by side. I do know its 8Mb bigger and has different checksums.

All right, that's cool.

Regarding your original question, you may want to try asking at No-Intro. Yakushi~Kabuto, in particular, is one of the most active SNES dumpers I can think of. I'll warn you, though, that some of the No-Intro guys can be frustrating to deal with, from my experience.

NSS was the Nintendo Super System, which was an arcade version of the SNES (like the PC10, it charged for time).

Gotcha. The Goodtools are supposed to be able to filter ROM lists by adding exclusions to the config file, and I excluded everything in GoodSNES except for Nintendo Power ROMs and that's the list it gave me. Tsk, tsk howdy doody.

[edit] (hee hee, I forgot about that forum filter)

Yeah, yeah, I know it's tacky to quote yourself but...

I was able to decipher this as Hajimari no Mori, which can translate to a million things, like Beginning of the Woods, or Origin of the Forest, or whatever.

In finding it's real name, I was able to figure out what it was (more of a personal quest but thought I'd share anyway) - and it seems to be a distant cousin of Dobutsu no Mori (Animal Forest/Animal Crossing) for the SFC (and was released on the VC in Japan not too long ago) You play as a boy who takes a train to a woodland village, and it seems to play out almost like a text adventure.
