I've always been interested in the works of modders and hackers, PD devs and the like. Some of these guys can work magic with really antiquated hardware. But we've also seen awful Chinese and Russian hacks of NES games that are matched in malevolence only by certain Italian-American game journalists. Usually, in the final days of the "economic viability" of a console, the limits are pushed to the breaking point.

RacketBoy's blog has a nice article about such games for the Famicom/NES here:

Pretty neat stuffs.

I'm disappointed how he didn't mention Willow anywhere on that article. That game could have passed off as a snes game or atleast a turbo-grafx.

I agree, It was very SNES-Zeldaish.

Why he also neglected "The Immortal" by EA is beyond me. That game's graphics are startlingly beautiful.

Well, that seals it. You ARE on dope.

As much as I love the game, Willow looks like ass. Limited color pallette, flicker out the ass. If you think it looks anything other than 8-bit, you are a crackhead on top of your apparent Down's syndrome.

The detail of this game looks far better than legend of zelda.

Willow is more detailed than Zelda, however, excessive detail coupled with a limited color palette makes for eye pain.

Zelda has a cleaner look compared to the excessive linework used in Willow.

Willow tried to push the NES too far. Capcom should have made it for the Genesis.

I think that's kinda a shitty list. Some of the games are right on. Blaster master might have good graphics, but that don't mean it looks 16-bit. a lot of NES games were gifted with good sprite artists. Prince of Persia NES don't deserve to be on the list either. The limited pallette really takes away from the game. Plus he called it a technical marvel. He should retitle the list "Really good games" or something rather than saying all the games are pushing the NES to the limits.

Clean aka simple graphics aren't what makes Zelda 1 better. I don't really know if it's better but it's still a classic.

Thrilla's Surfari? What the hell?

Where are the real "envelope-pushers" like Isolated Warrior, or GI Joe, or even the original Batman?

I have enjoyed most of Racket Boys articles but this one has to be the worst. Those forum members must have been on crack.

Merry Christmas everyone!

OH, and the strategy game Overlord, although a shitty piece of bowelmovement, was not too far off the original 16 bit title (Supremacy, Atari ST/Amiga).

Maybe we can start our own 8 bit envelope pushers.

We've already mentioned Batman, Immortal, Willow, etc.
