Its been awhile since I've posted here, but I recently came to an epiphany. I realized that many games that appeared in many so-called "canceled game" lists are really earlier names for games that were actually released.
TNK III for example, is often listed as a canceled NES game in many lists, but it actually came out under the name of Iron Tank (which was a pseudo-port of the arcade version of TNK III).
I came to the conclusion that "Return of Donkey Kong" is such a game. Particularly, its really just another name for Donkey Kong Classics, a two-in-one compilation of the first two DK games.
The only announcement of Return of Donkey Kong is in the The Official Nintendo Player's Guide, a book published in 1987, while Donkey Kong Classics came out a year later on October 1988 (according to Nintendo.com).
There was a game called "Return of Mario Bros." (An enhanced version of the original Mario Bros.) released for the Disk System in Japan, which was released on November 30, 1988, a few months after Donkey Kong Classics. Return of Mario Bros. was released in Europe in 1993 as "Mario Bros.: Classic Series".
If "Return of Mario Bros." became "Mario Bros.: Classic Series", then I don't think it would be that much of a stretch that "Return of Donkey Kong" became "Donkey Kong Classics".
EDIT: I know technically this should in the "General Video Games" forum, but since "Return of Donkey Kong" is often listed as an unreleased title, I felt it should've been posted at the Unreleased forum. Feel free to move the thread if you wish to. |

return of donkey kong was also mentioned in the third issue of the fun club news, and it was stated it was a sequel where you controlled donkey kong. i believe the offical np guide also mentioned that as well. |

I've already mentioned the Player's Guide in the original post. I can't find anything on Return of Donkey Kong in the third issue of Fun Club News. Are you sure it was the third issue?
As for playing as Donkey Kong in Return: for all we know, they could've been referring to Donkey Kong Jr. I still think there's too much of a coincidence between the announcement of Return of Donkey Kong and the fact that there's a game called Return of Mario Bros released at the same time as Donkey Kong Classics (even if it was in a different market). |

Is that supposed to be a real screenshot of Return of Donkey Kong or that they just using it as a placeholder? |

I'm sure it's just a placeholder. |
