Hey, folks. I found a fascinating (and nostalgic) picture book at the library over here in Japan, and so I'm busy scanning all the pages, poring over cool little tidbits in all the photos.
Here's a small preview of what I have so far: (sounding like the traitors in Code Name: Viper...)

Gotta hand it to Miyamoto - I'm not sure I could sit on Mario's face at work every day.
(I think the moustache would tickle).
Great work spotting all the details in the images, it's very entertaining so far. |

Great. Thanks for sharing these interesting images.
By the way, there seem a awful lot of sites that use images of the Super Famicom protoype, without probably knowing it's origin...
But, i made it clear, here. |

Ah, this same photoshoot was used in the making of Super Mario 3 article in Nintendo Power, maybe they scanned the same book?

They're both obviously publicity pieces, so I'm not surprised that Nintendo Power wanted to do an English version of the book's idea (how games are made) as an article in the mag.
The photos in NP and this book are different. So, same photo shoot, different editorial choices. |

Yes, he's definitely just showing off the SMB3 CHR. That looks like a retail copy of SMB3 in his FC. |

Also, those photos were taken in July 1989, and SMB3 was released October 1988. |

Any chance you could upload high-res scans of the pages with SMB3 screenshots on them? I noticed a few prototype shots in there (the ones that say "MARIO x [number]" in the status bar) that I'd never seen before. Apparently, the boss rooms used to have windows! |
