I found this searching for stuff on Motown Games. From rapper Eric "Eazy-E" Wright's final interview:

Quote:
What else?

My own Super Nintendo game coming out called Hittin' Switches from Mandingo Entertainment and Motown games-that's Super Nintendo in all different formats. There's one called Rap Jams coming out-an all-star rap basketball game. I have different artists on there like Coolio, Queen Latifa, Yo-Yo, Naughty by Nature. I could find out all the different artists that's in there.
Will some parent eventually complain that their kids knows about rap because of these games?
This isn't like Mortal Kombat where they shoot the guy. Mine don't got nothing to do with that. It's just low-riding and getting to the supershow, the car show. You go through obstacles, change the rims on your car…[coughs].

According to this article, Eazy-E was going to be in the Genesis version of RapJam.

Quote:
Motown Records is getting ready to launch Motown Games.

No, it's not an Olympics-style sports or endurance event. It's a new interactive and video-game division of the Detroit label.

Using its years of experience in urban music and film, Motown (in conjunction with Mandingo Entertainment, PolyGram and Philips Media) will create and market entertainment software combining music and black culture.

The new division's first release, due in February, will be Rap Jam, Volume One. Available first in the Super Nintendo format (with Sega Genesis and CD-ROM versions expected to follow), the street basketball video game will use rap stars and their music.

Among the acts will be Public Enemy, Warren G, Naughty by Nature, L.L. Cool J, Coolio, Queen Latifah, House of Pain, Easy E (in Genesis), Yo Yo and Onyx, who collectively have sold more than 25 million records.

I'm going to assume "CD-ROM" refers to computers and not Sega CD.

Motown Interactive Entertainment Software had a couple other things planned. From Billboard:

Quote:
In addition, Motown is scoping out a development team to produce the CD-ROM title "Through the Grapevine," a time-travel adventure program that integrates golden-age R&B music into gameplay. The company plans a children's title using Motown classics in 1996.

Thom Kidrin was the co-founder. He also co-founded American Softworks Corporation. According to his bio, he "was the Executive Director/Project Leader at Mattel Toys, working on the development of the first CD-based video game system." What would that have been?

It just seems like a false claim to me. The patent was filed in 1993:

It's cartridge-based but uses a video signal at the same time, it seems to overlay sprites over video. Ralph Baer was doing that in the early 70s!

His other patent seems to just be a design for a music video playing...thing:

Found this article from 1989:

Quote:
Amerman said Mattel is continuing a two-year project to develop an interactive compact disc player that would project movies and allow viewers to change the action. Competing toy companies, notably Hasbro Inc., have dropped their interactive video projects, declaring such toys too expensive to develop and to buy.

Sounds similar to Hasbro's NEMO.

That's probably this music video jukebox.

So Mr. Kidrin contacted me and told me a little about this system. As a formality, I usually ask for permission before posting stuff, but he never got back to me. Interesting stuff, though.
