Here is a list of some guy's game boy collection. He also lists the ROM ids and board types. He owns two copies of the japanese version one being DMG-TRA-1 and the other DMG-TRA-0 (alternate music version).

It appears that I had my facts backwards: What I recalled was the direct opposite, the it was a JP release and the musical variant was suspected in NA, but not confirmed. Maybe I read it, or remembered it reversely.

If it was an early US release as well, then it's strongly possible that I have one, as I purchased my GB system on the first week of launch. I guess I'll need to dig out and plow through my 'Tetris' carts to see if one is lurking in the lot. Very curious now indeed...

Guess we'll have to see. I became curious of this since I last discovered it two years ago, but I forgot/didn't think much of it then. A couple months later, I heard it in the GBS rip then I was curious as to what it was. Now I'm trying to spread information to everyone in hopes of secure a copy for myself. Surprisingly, barely anyone knew of this up until about a month ago.

Is there anyway to contact the guy to possibly strike up a deal for it? I just noticed that DMG-TRA-1 exist as the US version, so maybe a DMG-TRA-0 does exist as well. I'm sure we'll find out eventually.

maybe searching his nick will reveil some hints about how to get in touch with him

Actually I think I might have found the ultimate solution to this mystery:

http://nus001.web.fc2.com/dmg_trat/dmg_trat.html

Here someone claims the early version came boxed in a special Tetris Tsūshin Cable Set which features the code DMG-TRAT on the box instead of DMG-TRA

you can buy this pack here http://www.jap-sai.com/Games/Tetris/Tetris.htm#GB - play-asia lists it too but it's sold out.

He's also referring to the stamp on the cart. Please note the title screen displays Bullet Proof instead of Bullet-Proof

Inherently this brings one other question to the table: DMG-TRA-0 and DMF-TRAT must be slightly different versions of the initial version, I presume unless there is a typo in zabikt's list http://passat.neostrada.pl/zabikt/GB.txt

DMG-TRA-0 is the serial written on the Mask ROM, not the cart or box. Idea

Ah, ok. (I really need sleep to avoid asking blatantly obvious questions.)

So am I reading this right that the link cable set DMG-TRAT-included/version 1.0 cartridges all have a little empty blue rectangle above the "Made in Japan" on the label, or were they referring to the Tetris logo just being on a blue bar on all Japanese cartridges?

Edit: Or does it refer to whether or not there's a number stamped in that space? I 'unno.

I'm sure it refers to the stamp being 23 (or any number with no A). The stamp is right above the made in japan as you can easily see from a few carts on ebay or yahoo.

At least the cart from the DMG-TRAT set appears to feature a darker blue on the top than other carts. But that's not a foolproof indicator.

I contacted a seller on ebay who got two carts. According to him one being stamped 00A the other 23 which he confirmed again after another mail. When the item arrives I will report what I got here.

Interesting -- I was nosing around eBay a bit last night too, didn't bid on anything or contact anyone, but it looked like there was a range of minor variations on the label (the TRA-1 label lists the copyright as belonging to The Tetris Company, which I'd thought wouldn't have existed as such yet, unless it was a late '90s reprint?), with some labels definitely having lighter blue behind the Tetris logo than others. It'll be interesting to see how things shake out! I get the feeling that this would all be easier nosing around shelves somewhere in Akihabara with a Game Boy in hand, but I don't think that Super Potato is opening any locations in the midwestern U.S. anytime soon. Sad

I got the cartridge and it is indeed stamped 23. ROM id is DMG-TRA-0

The dump matches the one that is available in the net.

So here we have a true confirmed 1.0 from japan to settle this. I doubt it exists anywhere else.

Chris Leech has 23 stamped on his Japanese cart and it is the standard 1.1 version. Rolling Eyes

Here's something everyone will enjoy.

Here is a DMG-TRA-1, and this is the only time I can recall seeing one. Wonder if this has the alternate music as well.

I thought -1 is the dirt common version and -0 is the rare one.

Maybe this TRA-1 is the normal TRA version with a rare label variant, or maybe TRA-1 could mean 1-as-in the first version. I'm just guessing myself. I have never even seen a TRAT (They all have been disguised as a standard TRA) version even with the Link Cable Bundle edition, but that probably is because TRA-0 is the chip version number, a version 1.0 will have a higher chance of being the lucky find if 23 is stamped on the label, as I am Christina Aguilera discovered.

Sorry for the double post but I'd like to tell everyone that I have bought the TRAT link box containing a 23A stamped cart, which is a glop-top version of 1.1, and not the sought after 1.0 version. 23 by itself has to be stamped on the cart in order for it be 1.0.

Over the weekend I went to a nearby "Super" Hard-Off, viagra-powered, it would seem.

I spent a great deal of time looking for cool games & rare stuff, of which I found a few things, including stacks and stacks of loose Tetris carts. I put all the carts numbered 22, 23, 22A, or 23A, about a dozen of them into my basket. There were other ones like 04 or 08, but I imagined those were much later represses or something.

Anyway, while browsing, I found a junk GameBoy and a drained battery pack. I took the battery pack over to a wall socket in the shop, plugged it in, and crouched down while furtively testing out all the Tetris carts -- customers are not supposed to test anything that's in the "Junk" section.

Well, I found four 1.0 Tetris carts, all of them being stamped 23! 22A and 23A variants were all 1.1. It's nice to find so many early versions in the same place, but honestly I prefer the music of the 1.1 game. Anyway it's a cool piece of history. A picture to compare stamps and label colours (if relevant) is below.

I'm actually disappointed to learn that Chris Covell doesn't have a brick Game Boy on him at all times.
